Default 46 Pickup Kingpin Shims Where?

I searched around some, never found the definitive answer. Where along that pin is best or proper? Looks like they'd be least vulnerable clear down at the bottom under the rotating bearing. Or I guess they could go up top? The ones I removed were kinda torn up and I didn't note where they'd been. Thanks!

Edit; This was corrected in post #7.

I have always put the shims between the bearing and the axle. Not sure it matters if they are on top or below the bearing.

That sounds good to me. This front end has been through once already. I figured out today I think the torn shims I took out had been up top between the spindle and axle. Thanks J.

I put them on top between the axle and the spindle. On the bottom all the weight of the car in on the shim along with the bearing and will distort them.

I just happen to have a photo I came across showing the generally accepted method of assembling the king-pins on most axles.

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.s. Not sure if this applies to ALL king-pin assemblies but it's what we've found most times in the direction sheets supplied by customers that needed their bushings fitted?

I stand corrected, brain fog I guess! Yes, between the axle and the spindle on the upper side on the later models with the bearing on the bottom side. Sorry about that!! and thanks for the corrections.

Thanks a lot, everyone. It's sure fun having all these new, shiny little parts to mess with. Spring eye bushings, shackle bolts, shackles, kingpins, etc.
