Ya, what are those things on the side of the windshield? It looks like a wire, or hose coming from the bottom of each box.

Those are "semaphore" indicators. ( "turn signals" to you guys)

Yes. Almost all British and European cars up to the 1950's used a version of these "Trafficators". I have a 1951 Standard Vanguard that has ones similar to the VW in the picture. There were many, many variations as I have found out in trying to source a replacement lens for one of mine. Mine are even self-cancelling. Don't know if the earlier ones were.

Photo in here is the first roadster body I've seen in Russia. Wonder if it's a kit from USA assembled or is it locally made like the other cars. Local GAZ-A production started in Dec 1932. AA production started earlier.
