1928 Correct Colour Scheme
I have a 1928 Sports Coupe and I'd like to confirm the colour scheme before I paint the car.
From the Judging standards it says that the body colour is Dark Dawn Grey and the mouldings and reveals are the Light Dawn Grey. A couple of the other Model A books call for it the other way around and most of the cars I see painted in this paint scheme are the other way around. Light on the body, Dark on the mouldings. I'd like to do it right the first time. Your thoughts. The Old Tinbasher. |

Re: 1928 Correct Colour Scheme
I would go with the information in the MAFCA/MARC Paint & Finish Guide. It says Dawn Gray Dark on the main part, Dawn Gray Light on the reveals, belt & quarterpanel moundings and Straw pinstriping. I thing the guide is accurate.

Re: 1928 Correct Colour Scheme
The color scheme published (Dawn Gray Dark on the lower body) in the Restoration Guidelines and the Paint Guide was taken directly from 1928 original Ford sales literature. I have never found original literature that says otherwise.
However, last year I bought a 68,000 mile 1928 Sport Coupe. By the engine number it was a June or July 1928 build date. It is painted Dawn Gray Light on the lower body! Now we have another research project on our hands. Does anyone have Ford literature that states a buyer could order the colors reversed from standard? Or sales literature that would indicate a change in color schemes during 1928? |

Re: 1928 Correct Colour Scheme
Judging from your location and avatar I am presuming your car is an early Canadian Sport Coupe. According to the Canadian Service Letters from January 1928, there were four colours available, Arabian Sand, Niagra Blue, Evergreen, and Pelican Grey.
Here is the 1928 Sport Coupe that is featured in the Canadian Sales Brochure "The New Ford" Judging by the colours of the other vehicles featured in the brochure, this must be Pelican Grey. It is very similar to Dawn Grey Light.

Re: 1928 Correct Colour Scheme
Thanks Guys!!: Where did you find the original sales booklet. That's neat. I've never heard of Evergreen and Pelican Grey. Maybe I'l find a nicer colour scheme for my Sport Coupe. My Car is a Canadian build Oct. 28.
