What is this attached to the carb on 1936 Ford
My buddy just purchased this restored five window in Michigan. We hauled it back to Kansas City, MO on Monday. Need help identifying the tube that is attached to the float bowl and runs back to the firewall. Any Ideas? Thanks Nate Anello Lee's Summit MO

Gas supply for the SOUTHWIND heater which is mounted under the dash. Thats if it is still there. Other type heaters run on the engines hot water coolant. Regards, Kevin.

Yes there is an underdash heater and all the controls are present. Looking back over my pictures, he seems to be missing a fuel return line. I assume it mounts to the plate on the base of the carb as there is a plug there now. Thank you.

Vacuum line runs to the plate under the Carb. The vacuum is used to draw fuel vapor through the heating chamber from the Carb float bowl. The products of combustion do go into the engine through the same vacuum line

Return would be metal. Those switches under the dash are not SW. The SW heater works by pulling out the button on its face. That activates a bimetal switch to turn on a glow plug in the heater and opens the flow of gas. Once the heater lights off and reaches operating temp, a fan turns on and the glow plug turns off.

If it was mine, I'd hafta remove the entire heater installation ASAP. Then carefully pack it away in a box. And store it somewhere just in case I ever want to use it for something. 8^) Jack E/NJ

Re: What is this attached to the carb on 1936 Ford
I'm not sure of the reason behind the previous post. Don't need a heater. Worried about a combustion heater. All are as good a reason as another but I see no reason to fear a South Wind combustion heater that is properly maintained. Problems generally only arise when they are not properly maintained.
When a heater is needed, any type will work as long as they are inspected and found to be safely operable. I would worry more about an exhaust heat exchanger or manifold heater more than I'd worry about the combustion types as long as the fuel lines are not modified on them. A person will quickly smell a fuel leak but CO, not so much. Carbon monoxide leakage is a reality with those if cracks or other leaks form in the exchanger or manifold. We have to use carbon monoxide detectors in the aircraft for both types of heater. Heat exchangers and combustion liners have to be inspected every year in the aviation community. Hot coolant heaters were not common until a few years later but it takes a while for them to heat up. Combustion or exhaust heat exchanger type heaters get their heat right away. |

Re: What is this attached to the carb on 1936 Ford
I appreciate the information and will pass that along to my buddy. Next time I see the car, I'll take a better look at the heater switches that are mounted under the dash. I did find a good video on youtube that explained how the Southwind heater works, so it will be interesting to find out why the switches are there. Thank you gentleman, Nate

Re: What is this attached to the carb on 1936 Ford
There is absolutely no danger with a SW. There is a continuous flow of gas and gas exhaust from the carb back to under the carb. If the exhaust circuit leaks then nothing happens because its the vac from it that pulls the gas to begin with. Any leak in the circuit kills the whole operation.

Re: What is this attached to the carb on 1936 Ford
Had a NOS one in the original box, but could not find the parts that mounts on the carb.
So I sold it. Have a bad copy of the installation manual. Here is "the Things you should know about your South Wind" Last edited by Mr 42; 07-31-2020 at 02:14 PM. |

If I wanted a heater I think I would go the hot water route. Plus it would help cool that flathead a bit more. They need all the help they can get to stay cool.

I had a SW in a car I drove in high school, loved that heater, instant heat!
