31 pick up truck
Does anyone know for certain the following question;
Were all the 31 pick ups with a Budd cab delivered with a wide bed, or were some delivered with a narrow bed? There is a 31 pick up for sale on the MAFCA web with a Budd cab, but with a narrow bed. Could this have been added later? Tom Endy |

Re: 31 pick up truck
As the beds and cabs had different numbers, it has always been my understanding that there could be different cab, bed combinations within the same time frame.
The closed cab pickup had the number 82B for the '30-'31. In August of 1931 the all steel cab made by the Budd company replaced the “soft top” cabs of the previous years but they kept the number 82B. The cab could also be found on the AA truck as well. The beds were 78A for the narrow bed and 78B for the later wide bed. The number for the deluxe bed is 66A. At lease that has always been my understanding. I hope someone has "source" documentation on this subject.

Re: 31 pick up truck
My all steel Budd cab pickup came to me with a narrow bed.
I have no particular documentation that I can point to, but it was my understanding that Henry, in his quest to use up all the parts in the pipeline, resulted in the late '31 pickups that could have any combination of: • Steel or Soft top • Indented or Flat firewall • Narrow or Wide bed

Re: 31 pick up truck
My wife's 31 pick-up has a wide bed and a soft top. I have seen all three combinations in the past. Ours was built in Long Beach.

I've seen lots of different combos, most recently a wide bed, indent BUT with soft top. Several steel tops, indent but narrow bed. Several years ago I almost bought a steel top, indent, B engine BUT it had a brand new narrow bed on it. Paul in CT |

Re: 31 pick up truck
There's no way to tell what has happened in the last 85 years.The Model A truck that got me interested in the trucks instead of other body styles was a late 31 with a narrow bed.The original owner was rear ended in 1933,and the wide bed was just too hard to come by at the time.So they hung a narrow bed and fenders on it and called it good.If you didn't know you wouldn't know that it had originally had the widebed on it.The original owners son told me about it,he was riding in the truck when it got hit.He was 18 at the time.The back of the cab had a arched scar across the back,where the top of the headboard had hit it when the truck got rear ended.
