Great People in the A hobby
Called Sammie Guthrie (Arizona Model A) today to ask him if I had paid a recent bill and ended up talking for 30 minutes or more on everything from overdrives to motor mounts to high comp heads to brakes. What a resource he is --must be the most knowledgeable A man in the valley of the sun. He convinced me that I need an OD but didn't tell me where to get the $2200.00.
It still amazes me that there are so many people willing to help in this hobby, Fordbarn and elsewhere. Will Rogers said: "I never met a man I didn't like" and I have never met an A owner unwilling to help. |

Yes Bob you are so right!
We are all very lucky to be part of history in keeping 80 year old cars runnning. The members of this fraternity are intelligent, resourceful and always willing to share their wisdom and experience with each other. Success in this hobby is based on experience, passion, trial and error, persistance and advise from those who have successfully dealt with an issue before. Re: Great People in the A hobby
I have been playing with model A Fords for 50 years, and have found the nicest people drive them.

Ditto regarding Sammy Guthrie. I've been buying my parts and supplies from him for years. Not only is he extremely helpful and knowledgeable, but if I order before 1pm, the package is at my door the next day. Best of all, he just puts his invoice inside the package, and trusts that you'll mail him a check. Not many people today are that trusting.

Re: Great People in the A hobby
Bob--nice looking car....I have a 30 Town Sedan just like it, and love it. He is right about the overdrive, and assume he is talking about the Mitchell. I put one in right after I got my car 4 years ago, along with a Snyder HC head, and have never regretted it. I drive my car several times a week, both on the local freeways and on fast surface streets, and cannot imagine having an A without some sort of OD. If you like to drive your car much, and more than just "putting", save up for one. And yes, lots of nice folks in the hobby!

Terry-- That combination was definitely his recommendation. Mitchell with Snyder head.

I come from a younger generation and I have never met so many people who have old school values. I have been driving my phaeton for 36 years and I am 45 now. This hobby rocks.

Re: Great People in the A hobby
Bob--
My first experience with the Mitchell OD was with a friend who had just installed one in his 30 Roadster....we were on the way to the Orange County (Calif.) Pancake breakfast, and he got on the local freeway....he accelerated up to about 45 mph and then shifted into OD...it was just amazing how smooth and quite the car got instantly, and this was in a decent running car. As others have said, with he OD you do not always have to go 60-65.....it is just wonderful to drive 45-50 like you were loafing along. Terry |

Re: Great People in the A hobby
I use a spray called "Black Magic-tire wet spray". I made a cardboard mask to keep it off the wheels. Got it at NAPA.
