Default Inner fender to fender anti squeak rubber

Which way does this rubber go? It has a wide side and a short side with about a 20 degree bend. In the pic I would guess that it is pic number 4 with the short side on the engine bay side. but not sure. Anyone know for sure?

When I did mine (both '55's), I laid the long side on the fender apron flange with the short side sticking upward to mate with underside of fender. Aim the short side so it is facing up or forward like HRR's photo showed in his blog.
Also at the corner, I mitred the corner so the rubber does NOT overlap to insure an even seal all across.

Question on staples. Can you use regular staple gun T50 staples or are they too small in diameter? I have some stainless staples but do not know if the diameter is large enough.
