Default 1935 or 1936 Water Temperature Indication

I have an after market water temperature thermometer type gage in my 36 Ford. At normal running temperatures the my gauge reads at the very top of the thermometer. For those who have original temperature gauges, where does yours indicate at normal running?

May I suggest pulling the bulb out of the pump. Get yourself a jug of boiling water and place the sender in it. You will get an idea of where it sits with boiling water.

I have done that and at 190 degrees mine indicates at the very top of thermometer. I was looking at an NOS Ford gauge and before I spent the money was wondering if original Ford gauges indicated more in the middle of the thermometer?

All orig gauges I have had read just above the middle ,that is with a 155 or 160 thermostat. When under load or going up a hill they would rise up below the top line. Now that is not on a 90 degree summer day.It would go up above the line.

Here is an excellent original - this is a view at 160/170 temp range.

Thank you, this is very helpful. I have 180 thermostat in mine and it runs at the top of the normal. So maybe mine is not far off.

My '35 ran toward the top at running temp, about 3/4 the way. The problem I had was not knowing what the real temp was or more so what the other side of the engine was doing since they are using separate thermostats. After installing two independent aftermarket gauges I can read them both and know exactly what's going on. By the way, the right side tends to run a tad cooler until completely warned up. I run 180's...

In my experience the fluid temp gauges in my '35 and '36 fluctuate during operating conditions and I have had to estimate from their feedback what the actual situation is.

Driving in various conditions will educate you to the likelyness of boil over.

This picture was snapped after coming off a very warm August interstate run, even if we were in Maine. 480 miles in a couple of days. I'd just shut it off and the temp was climbing as we sat.

You'll know when it boils over, until then it doesn't tell you an actual temperauture.

Thanks for the reply. My car runs at the top of the normal line to full red. The car has never overheated, however I did put a direct reading gauge in the cylinder head and it reads between 180 to 200 when I check it, but have to open the hood to check it. I’m getting the impression that most of the gauges read the same. I’ve learned that each of these cars have a distinct personality!
