Default '40 mercury,is pinion solid with driveshaft?

Stupid question,but I was told pinion gear is part of driveshaft,unlike a Ford that has a 6 spline coupler. Doesn't make sense and I don't want to tear the rearend down till I know. Relieve my ignorance.
