I have a Model A that had been converted to hydraulic brakes. I am trying to install the right rear drum. I cannot get it on. The brake shoe is not allowing the drum to be installed. Any tips for installing the drum? Thanks

Are the brake adjusters backed off? Axle key lined up?

The axle key should have tapered end INBOARD, with the beveled side of key DOWN in the slot, toward axle. DD

Most likely you have two adjusters both bottom and top SO make sure you adjust both of them inward. I always try and make sure the key way is either at the "12" or "6" position, that way its easy to orient the drum when sliding it back on!!!

In this instance I would remove the key and the brake shoes. I would fit the drum and make sure it fits properly with the correct relationship to the backplate. Once that is deemed to be ok I would fit the key and make sure the drum fits ok again. Then fit the shoes and make sure all the adjusters are fully released. See if the drum goes on ok.
There have been instances of incorrectly shaped repro brake shoes. If you have old parts try those. There is also a situation where the shoe reliners assume the drums will have been skimmed out. It can then be difficult to fit the drums if they are std 12.000"
Do some investigating and come back with your results.

Another "Helpful" tip as I just learned......Install the pins for the E-brake arm and E-Brake actuator arm for the shoes from the backside (backing plate) OF the shoe and the horse shoe clip on the outside (Or Drum side) of the shoe. Put the pins in, then slide the clip on to HOLD the pins in place, THEN hook your spring between the shoes, THEN pull the clips off the pins, slide your finger behind to hold it in place and slide the E-Brake actuator ON and lock in back in place with the clip. THEN slide the E-Brake arm in to the actuator slot THEN on to it's pin and lock it in place with the clip. Then hook your E-Brake cable to the arm..... It's way easier that way!!!! ASK me how I know!!!!
ALSO IF you have the old shoes compare your new ones to the old ones.....The new ones MAY be a little longer where it goes into the wheel cylinder SO you might have to grind down those tabs just a little bit to get the shoes fitting right!!!!

In the picture it looks like the emergency brake is not fully retracted. That will stop the drum going on.

I bought this truck in 1968 before I had a driver’s license. Got it running changed the mater cylinder bled the brakes and was good to go. When I went to change the wheel cylinders I noticed in the rear brake the emergency brake cable was never attached to the arm. Thanks for the heads up. I will check the emergency brake for it is fully released.

Also be sure to clean all that grease off the axle and hub taper, needs to
be squeaky clean.

Hi,
Finally had some time to work on the brakes. I disconnected the parking brake and adjusted the shoes in a bit and finally got the hub on. Thanks for all your help and worthwhile suggestions. I am very appreciative. I will keep you posted on the progress on getting it going again.

The shoes to my knowledge have not been arched. They are the shoes that came with the car in 1968. They are barely warn. Should I have them arched?

Not if they are worn but a good idea on new shoes.

torque that baby down to 180-200lbs. If you don't have a torque wrench that high get a long pipe and put it on your wrench and jump on it

Key set is important as mentioned.
