Re: Classic Fighters Part 3, Nearly There!!
Nice photos! While I prefer the staccato of the radial engines, the big v-12s sing a lovely note at full throttle. I had the pleasure of watching unlimited class air racing with a bunch of modified warbirds and it was like no other motor sport I've seen. I don't recognize the roundel on the two P-40s, any idea? Also is the P-51 in photo #5 in French colors? Are these aircraft based in New Zealand? Thanks for sharing.

Re: Classic Fighters Part 3, Nearly There!!
First P40, RAF roundle with center red circle missing was used in the Pacific on RAF planes, the red circle removed to stop confusion with the Japs and there red circle.
Second P40 is flying tigers I believe. The P51 looks like an RAF rondel with a bad reflection making it look odd? Thanks for sharing pics. Martin. |

The first P-40 Kittyhawk is in its original colours of the RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force). It was rescued from the Papua New Guinea jungle and rebuilt in NZ. The second P-40, NZ3009, is one of only two surviving actual NZ WWII fighters (the other is the Corsair) which was rescued from a WWII aircraft graveyard by a pair of school boys in the 1950's. It was later rebuilt to fly, again in NZ, and is in the colours of a WWII Chinese Nationalist ace. Interestingly this P-40 was based at Masterton NZ during the war and over 70 years later currently resides there. |
