Are cylinder bore sleeves reliable in Y Blocks?
Does anyone have information on Y Block cylinder bore sleeves?
Is the procedure reliable and cost effective? I have a 292 engine block that may need one cylinder sleeved. Thank you for any information available. |

Re: Are cylinder bore sleeves reliable in Y Blocks?
I've not had to sleeve a y-block but I've had a couple of flatheads sleeved. One was 20+ years and many thousands of miles ago and it's still going strong with no sleeve issues. It was bored .80 over after sleeving one cylinder. I think it depends more on the quality of the work than anything to do with a particular block design. Many current model engines are sleeved at the factory. One hole shouldn't be a problem. Even all 8 is doable but it would be expensive. Each cylinder would have to be sleeved one at a time to keep the block from getting wiggly.

Re: Are cylinder bore sleeves reliable in Y Blocks?
I have sleeved many blocks, from Model T's to a 427 FE (very thin walls) and never had a problem. If done properly, the sleeved hole will be stronger than the original cylinder. Compared to a 289/302 a Y block has thick walls and is an easy job.
It is getting hard to find a machinist that knows how to do it properly. I 've seen many blocks done improperly, they were bored all the way thru instead of leaving a step at the bottom. By leaving the step, there is no chance of the sleeve moving. Also, if it is fit properly, there will be no chance of a coolant leak if the original hole was cracked into the water jacket. The negative side to this today is the cost. Forty years ago I could sleeve all 8 holes in a flathead for what it'll probably cost do do 1 hole today |

It would help to know where you're located but if your anywhere near central CA Tim McMaster is the guy you want to talk to. He's back from Bonneville where he ran just shy of 200 mph with a Y block in a roadster.

Or if you're in or near Houston, TX check with Frank Carlson at Katy-Houston Automotive Machine. He's meticulous almost to a fault. Another one in TX is Eaton Balancing in Lorena. Ted Eaton is a y-block guru and has won the Engine Masters Challenge with a very stout y-block. He's also the moderator of the Y-blocks Forever forum.
