33/34 rear end
I have been doing a few 33/34 rear ends lately , and see they are different in the pinion and carrier bearings to the later ones. I think the engineers beefed them up.they also have a larger lube hole through to the centre of the pinion bearing.
The bearings also cost a lot more, this got me thinking and I got a later centre section out and have done some measuring, If I skim .060 off the face of each axle trumpet and each side of the centre section and .040 off the brake backing plate mounting flange on the axle tube it will be the same over all dimension as the 33/34 axle assembly , and if you are using a later 3.78 or the 6 spline pinion the driveshaft will already be the correct length. Then only thing that will have to be done is to shorten the torque tube to suit. This I have not done yet as it will take some fancy maching and setting up and my lathe is not that long. any one done this? Re: 33/34 rear end
the bolt holes are clocked differently also for the bells, or trumpets as you refer to them

SEEMS LIKE that's true, and of course, that would play hell with lining-up the rear spring and torque tube/drive shaft. DD |

Re: 33/34 rear end
It is definitely TRUE - and the clocking is super important for everything to be where it is supposed to be. The only 'fix' would be to cut the ends off and reweld them in the correct location. Seems like a lot of work, just to use the later banjo carrier . . . . but I hear you on the bearings (have rebuilt two of these same rears in the last couple years).

Re: 33/34 rear end
I never checked the clocking of the bolts, if they are not the same then its one BIG job,
I will check that this arvo, Lawrie |

Re: 33/34 rear end
You should also notice that a measurement taken from the axle centerline to the flat face where the torque tube bolts-up is slightly less on the early ('32-'34) center section than on the late center. If I remember correctly, it's about 9/16" shorter than on the late center section. In addition, the early center is 5/16" narrower than the late one. DD

Re: 33/34 rear end
Yes I just checked the bolts, they are clocked, that makes it a big job, so will just stick to the smaller bearinged 33/34 .
They are not that bad as there 33 has about 70000klms on a set and no drama. Lawrie |

Re: 33/34 rear end
Lawrie if you managed to find quality bearings to fit the 33 banjo, thats a good thing. When I rebuilt my 34 pickup rear it took some time to locate some quality early ones. The repros sold by most vendors are as usual well below standard. The pinion double cup was the hardest to locate a quality one. I seem to recall that the Bower spigot bearing for the end of the pinion was the same as later ones.
