- THE DEMISE of DAN MATHEWS – CHP -

A little known fact concerning the career end of BRODERICK CRAWFORD (aka Dan Mathews), in the popular 1950's TV SERIES HIGHWAY PATROL, is how he was hurt on the set during one episode filming.

He was engaged in a high speed pursuit and when the fleeing car left the road and crashed, Dan Mathews stopped his cruiser and jumped out with his snub-nose .38 to make a felony arrest.

Unbeknownst at the time, a set worker had failed to secure properly the POLICE INTERCEPTOR WHIP ANTENNAE to the drip rail. As the cruiser came to a screeching halt, that whip antennae reared back and just as Dan stepped out of the car, the antennae whipped forward and tore into his fedora. It then again sprung back and as it came forward again, knocked the fedora off and began beating his head and ears as it went back and forth.

He was immediately incapacitated and had to retire after the incident.

What was really strange, he dropped the revolver and it hit the ground, resulting in an accidental discharge. The round hit the camera hence there being no film evidence of the incident.

It was later determined that the antennae retaining clip had a factory recall from BUICK and had he been driving a MERCURY, the incident would never have happened.

RIP Broderick and a good 10-4 and OVER AND OUT to you … sob ...

They're performers, and along with nearly all producers & directors generally have no idea how to do a special effects stunt safely.

The Alec Baldwin / Halyna Hutchins’ shooting death happened about an hour north of me on a movie ranch location I've worked at several times in the past.

I once had a producer/director bring in a gun for approval to use in their open to the public event.
It was 45 automatic in a shoe box with the blanks & live ammo loose and mixed together in the same shoe box. To top it off the gun had a live round in the chamber and a half full clip when he handed it to me.

KULTUZ, you may want to take Peoria off your stop list anyway...it's getting pretty rough down there, what with shootings almost every day. We go there at least three times a week, but I don't think I want to visit it at night. Some of the shootings are now during the day, not only at night.

I pulled into a parking place at the local WW a couple months ago and this was the car in the next space. Almost didn't want to be that close to it and in the line of fire for round two.

Even Broderick Crawford's loaded revolver seems safe compared to what Buster Keaton used to go through. (Sorry about the era inappropriate background music in this video, but Keaton's voice is in the soundtrack giving narration, so I used this clip.) If you like this kind of stuff, also check out Harold Lloyd, who Buster mentions in the narration. He was just as crazy.
