My New Project! CCPU
Last Fall I got a good deal on a 29 chassis. I've been looking all winter for a good body and last weekend I finally got one. It's a 28/29 pickup cab and it came from Kansas. It was an AA truck and it's been sitting out in a field since the 50's. It's in good shape as far as sheet metal, It needs all new wood though. My plan is to restore it according to the touring class judging standards.

Re: My New Project! CCPU
I just got my 29 CCPU running and drove it today after a very long nap. Glad to see another one coming together.

Re: My New Project! CCPU
Thanks everyone! I will post pictures on this thread as I go along. Any pics or advice on 28/29 pickups would be helpful, especially on wood and top installation. I'm going to start taking the cab apart this weekend.
Tim-I guess I figured if I get enough two seaters I'll have the same amount of space as a sedan. |

Re: My New Project! CCPU
I think Touring Class is the way to go. You'll have the satisfaction of a well restored truck without all the aggravation of having the cadmium plated what-not being the correct month part for the truck. Fine point is great for the hobby, but a nice, clean, correct truck will be nearly as rewarding without the obsessive details. Hopefully I didn't just step on some toes.

Re: My New Project! CCPU
Well, I'm off and running! I've got the cab pretty well stripped down to bare bones. There is some minor rust in the cowl and in the rear of the floor pan...easy fixes. The doors are in excellent condition and surprisingly the door pins came out relatively easy! My next move is to get it all out to the sandblaster and then start patching the rust holes.

Re: My New Project! CCPU
The rear pieces of your cab look to be in great shape, not so beat up like most.
There is a lot of info on these trucks here on fordbarn, try searches in the archives for 82-A, 29CC, 29 CC, 28-29CC, etc. and you will be busy reading for a while. Thanks for the photos of the rubber plug under the seat. -DAN |

Re: My New Project! CCPU
Well, I got a few more things done this week. I took the back cab panels apart and also started working on straightening out the cab corners. I picked up some fenders today! The fronts are decent, the rear fenders are pretty rough so I'll probably keep looking for another set. Oh and I think my gas tank has a leak.

I'm at a similar point with my 29CCPU (A2344243). Engine and frame serials even match!
My engine is out, but I have yet to get the axles and springs off. My basement is awash with cleaned/new car parts waiting for paint, assembly and installation Rich |

Re: My New Project! CCPU
Been pretty busy lately as I am also building a 40 Ford hot rod and helping a buddy with a 32 five window coupe......and finishing up school. Still finding time for the truck though. Been patching up the back cab panels, removed the old floor pan (it turned into swiss cheese during sandblasting) and welding up the holes in the sub frame. Lots of work to do!!

Re: My New Project! CCPU
Made some progress on the truck tonight. The back part of the seat riser was rusted out pretty bad so I made a patch and welded it in. I think it turned out really nice. I've also started shooting primer on a lot of the pieces.

Re: My New Project! CCPU
Hi Jake I also have a 28/9 pick-up,mixed parts not a show piece. I bought it in July of 59 at age 14. The only draw back here in a small town is I can't get away with anything= everyone knows my truck. I bought , a long time ago , a set of the blue prints for all the wood. I have shared them with a few guys putting one together , and will with you if you need. More like if your good with wood work. All I ask is you pay for the copying and shipping. Hope you off that sun visor soon. I'm at [email protected] (dumb computor) Do you have headlights yet? I'ed be lost without my old truck - it's part of my life. Wish mine had been in as good of shape when I got it.

Re: My New Project! CCPU
Jake, I started my 29 ccpu restoration a few months ago. I started on the chassis first and will do the cab last. My biggest problem so far is finding two good doors. I find bad rust but no winners yet. Looks like you are having as much fun as I am.

Jake, your body work really looks nice. It looks like you are using a mig welder. I was wondering if you would show the tool that you use to get those clean cuts when you cutout the old sheet metal. Thanks.

Re: My New Project! CCPU
Phaetonblue, Thanks!! Yes, I do use a mig welder. Not the best way to weld sheet metal but a tig welder just isn't in my budget right now and the mig welder does fine as long as you take your time. When I cut out old sheet metal I use the Dewalt 4.5x.045 cutting wheels. They work great. I've used them on everything from 18 gauge sheet metal to 1/4" plate.

Re: My New Project! CCPU
I'm back!!! Been working on some other projects lately but finding time to work on the truck as well. I've spent many hours straightening out the beat up cab corners and back panels. A LOT of metal shrinking and hammer and dolly work. This weekend I worked on the doors quite a bit. They turned out to be pretty rough. I've been working on the inner door bottoms. I made all the patches and got them tacked in. Next week I hope to replace the outer skins.

Re: My New Project! CCPU
My March 29 CC pickup came from a seller in Oakham, MA, where the truck had been used by the cemetery association for light earth moving duties. It was pretty rough, mostly the body, with the lower rear body panel fully separated from the floor pan. The only thing really holding the body together was the four oak strips used as the seat support behind the upper cushion.
It was bought by me in 1977 as my graduation present from college. Some parents give their children a car on their graduation? Well, I picked my car myself. I restored it mechanically pretty much. Drove it around for a few years on weekends and parades. And then family and job changes kind of got in the way. Now, the end of my career is in sight and my children's college is paid for so I'm re-kindling the interest. I have to have SOMETHING to do after I retire. Otherwise I get OLD. The truck is currently spread out all over the inside of my barn. That is 100 percent of my first Model A, about 70 percent of the next, perhaps 40 percent of the third, and a whole bunch of other parts including a Gordon Smith Air Compressor. People find out you have a Model A and "Gee I have this engine block that's been hanging around and I don't know what to do with it. Do you want it?" I'm a glutton for punishment. And who among us can say no. Anyway, looks like fun. You're doing EXTREMELY WELL not only doing the work, but documenting for our examination as well. I hope you're keeping it all in a scrap book to keep with the truck when you er, loan it to someone. Good luck, Joe K

jakeknapp29, Thank you for keeping up this fantastic build thread. You started it 3/23/12, soon it will be a year. To date you have posted, if I count correctly, about 50 great photos. Looking at your join date and your number of posts it appears you're more a man of action than of words. But then, Confucius say "Picture worth 1000 words" so thank you for that most of all.

Re: My New Project! CCPU
Great job Jake!
So its not important to spray on the primer straight away after sandblasting? I thought it was essential to do it immediately? I guess it depends whether you live in a dry climate. Here in NZ its pretty moist most of the time and we prime sheet metal within minutes of sand-blasting or bead-blasting. Rust never sleeps! |

Re: My New Project! CCPU
If the panel was badly rusted , it will have oxygen in the pores, and it will rust badly again very quickly, you will see it brown stain within hours.
With my very particular jobs, I would sandblast , then apply deoxidene (phosphoric acid) to where the bad rust was, and let it sit for 48 hours, then re blast it. If the panel was not too bad before blasting , it can be kept in a dry environment while working on for months / years . If you rub the panel with anything from 36 upwards to reduce the profile , it will not rust as bad either when left in bare metal. Absolutely beware of bare fingers on panel if you want it to stay non rusty for a while. |

Made some more progress on the wood installation this week. It's gone together very nicely so far. I took the front fenders, radiator shell and tailgate to the sandblaster a few days ago. I also got a brand new Brookville bed on order. They said it should be ready in two or three weeks.

Still making some progress. Finished welding up doors and about done with body work on the doors. Put a fender well in for the side mount spare. Patched up a rough set of splash aprons. Got a new set of running boards but still waiting for Brookville to finish up the bed.

Re: My New Project! CCPU
I picked up the bed from Brookville a few weeks ago. They make some excellent products out there and super quality! The bed is perfect. Currently getting it ready for primer. Also been working on splash aprons and radiator shell.

Re: My New Project! CCPU
Progress has been a bit slow lately. Got the engine and tranny out and taken apart. Hopefully get the rest of the chassis apart soon and off to sandblast. Body work is about done but going to wait until spring to paint.

Re: My New Project! CCPU
Love the trucks. I would like a 30/31 ccpu. I was even thinking If I came across the right ccpu I would trade for my 30 deluxe roadster

Re: My New Project! CCPU
Is the Deluxe Roadster bigger inside then the roadster pickup? From dash to seatback, that is.

Going to swap meets and finding the bit you need. Gives you heaps of inspiration when you get home and offer the part up to the car. I go to to about ten swaps a year, so I get about ten shots of inspiration each year. |

Pooch, I agree! Hunting down parts for this project has been a fun challenge! I try to go to as many swap meets as I can throughout the year. |

Jake,
We haven't heard anything about the progress of your restoration of the 29 pickup for over 9 months. It looks like you are doing a great job. How's it coming? Rusty Nelson |

Re: My New Project! CCPU
I know, Its been awhile! I am still working on the truck. Progress has slowed due to my new job but I am still getting things done. I went to Hershey a few weeks ago and picked up a set of rear fenders and door latches for the truck. I hope to start painting body parts soon. I decided to try something different on this restoration and I powder coated nearly all the chassis components. Looks sooo nice.....hopefully it holds up well. I will post pics soon!!

Re: My New Project! CCPU
Great to see ya back Jake.
Check my album out, it may give you some ideas on what to drop in the pickup bed to go to your swaps in.... I built this since you were here last. |

Re: My New Project! CCPU
Well, I have to say I'm a little embarassed. I just realized how long it has been since I posted anything here. I can't believe it has been four years since I started this build. Where has the time gone??? To make a long story short, I got really frustrated with this project and didn't touch it for probably a year and focused on some other projects. I finally built my motivation back up and am ready to finish this thing. Just about ready to finish up the body work and prep for paint. I'm also working on putting the engine back together. I did all my own babbitt pouring and line boring. Here are a few pics to get started back up again. I promise to post more soon.

Re: My New Project! CCPU
Great project, keep that windshield visor, mine is non stock but makes my truck more interesting, the two holes with the clincher nuts on the driver side post are for the mirror bracket. If you can't find one a vendor at the Hellertown A show reproduced them, one of the Barners would be able to put you in contact with him.

I have always thought it a shame to cover up a well done chassis. That truck is going to be sharp.

Re: My New Project! CCPU
The weather is finally warming up! I was able to test my paint on the radiator shell. Turned out nice! Hopefully I'll be able to spray the cab in the next few weeks.

Re: My New Project! CCPU
I'm still plugging away on paint work. I've got quite a bit done but still a long way to go. I painted the cab last weekend. I've driven the chassis around the yard a few times now as well.

Re: My New Project! CCPU
Looks very nice.
Is that the later style steering wheel painted red? It looks like a large hub on it. Actually they are closer to brown, and that's the color Ford called them. |

Re: My New Project! CCPU
Good eye Tom! Yes, it is a later wheel. I won't be keeping it on permanently. It was just on old cracked/broken wheel I had laying around and I filled the broken out areas with filler and sprayed it with red primer so I could drive the chassis around.
