How Do I Cover Up Whitewall Tires?
I recently purchased a Model A that came with a good set of Firestone whitewall tires. Its just me, but I don't think a Model A looks correct in whitewall tires. I know I can turn them around on the rims but is there a product that I can stain the whitewalls black? Thanks for your help, Ed

Re: How Do I Cover Up Whitewall Tires?
First, I would dismount the tires and turn them around - outside to inside. I have heard the the product Mother's Back to Black is good for restoring black items like black bumpers. You might buy a bottle and try it on the whitewalls. I don't know if it would work, but if the whitewalls are inside, even if it wasn't perfect, it wouldn't be noticed much. If the Back to Black doesn't work, I think you could paint the whitewalls with a flat black paint, again since the whitewalls would be inside, the finish wouldn't be noticed much. I to, don't care for whitewalls on model A's. But to each his own.

I covered up a set of white-walls, using Black Stove Polish ! I'm sure that you up in Maine, know what that is. People here in Florida never heard of it. You, probably, have some. Try it, you'll like it ! It will stain ANYTHING black, MIKE |

Re: How Do I Cover Up Whitewall Tires?
Find the store where the automotive painters get their paint and they will probably also sell tire black intended to be used for what you are trying to do.

Re: How Do I Cover Up Whitewall Tires?
Seems like you have been given a number of options to "paint" the white walls. As some have mentioned, tire black will work well. Brattons and Snyders both sell a good quality tire black. Or try NAPA for the tire black they sell. It might take a few coats but you should get the result you are looking for.

Re: How Do I Cover Up Whitewall Tires?
Try and trade them for blackwalls.I had some whitewalls, was going to paint them, then somebody suggested trying to trade for what I wanted.I put out an ad and got 20-30 responses the first day.I got way better tires than I had to start with.A lot of people love them.

Re: How Do I Cover Up Whitewall Tires?
I second the idea of trading them. Some drivers may want those white wall tires and be happy to trade you their black walls.

I asked my 93 year old father in law about your question. He gave me the canned product pictured here. Hmm, probably older than I am, so don't know if available nowadays. Mabe someone here will recognize/know. |

Re: How Do I Cover Up Whitewall Tires?
Would these products also bring back the inserts on '31 running boards?
Is one product better than another for the running board application? Tried the tire dressing (the wet look stuff), worked great - for a day, then back to dull... Thanks. (Not trying to hijack the thread, just seems related)

Re: How Do I Cover Up Whitewall Tires?
I painted all 4 whitewall tires that are on my Delivery with a can of 1967 vintage Turtle Wax Tire Black. Two coats and they look just like black rubber. Brushed it on with no problem, and as of yet, no pealing or fading. Sometimes (actually most times) older is better ! Don't know if they still make it.

Re: How Do I Cover Up Whitewall Tires?
I know for a fact that "Back to Black" doen't last for more than 3 months. I won't be buying that stuff again despite the fact it was recommended by many.

Re: How Do I Cover Up Whitewall Tires?
Hey Ed, no matter what you do, they (the tires) will look like crap as time passes. I am looking for a set of decent 21' whitewalls for my Tudor i'm restoring. PM me if your interested in selling them ?? Blackwall tires are cheap.
Thanks, Joe [email protected] |

Here are some white walls stained with black stove polish. The front tires are actually white walls. I liked it so well, I've dressed my blackwall tires and running boards with it. This was done about three years ago. MIKE CLICK ON PHOTO TO ENLARGE - Twice |
