You know, if a car manufacturer had the answer to this question, they could put all other car makers out of business.

I'm Sorry. Have you ever actually SEEN a 46-48 Ford?
You want to say again that my cars are cheap and ugly?

Hudsons must be beautiful cars.

American's had not been able to buy a new car since 42 and were buying new cars faster than they could be manufactured. Ford did not need to change the styling on these post war years because the cars were selling themselves. As a result ford made more of this body style than say their cars from the 30's. The depression kept cars sales down too.
I think that is why there are so many of the 46-48 ford out there still today. I think the availability of these years also contributes to lower selling prices. I do not believe they are ugly or not wanted, I do believe they are more plentiful in numbers than say 1932-1940 fords.
My grandfather told me that when he got out of the service in 46 he came home and wanted to buy a new ford. He went to the dealer and ordered a new 1946 buisness coupe. He had to wait for delivery of the car since the demand was so high and ford was selling cars faster than production could build them. These cars sold well and ford sold many of them before eventually giving way to the new 1949 models "shoebox" fords.
I believe Seth said it best!

The 46-48 have some nice lines and make for easy hot rodding. My Dad brought me home from the hospital in a 47 station wagon, so that might have something to do with my enjoyment of them. I prefer the '46 styling.

Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. As for me, I love the '42 -'48 Ford body styles and over the years I've owned all but the Sedan Delivery. I've had our '47 Convertible for 17 years and each time I drive it I like it even more. As for them being "cheap" to buy, just try to fine (even a project) Convertible or Woody.

I've had a 42-48 since I pulled a 46 Tudor out of a farmers field for $25.00 in 1973.He gave me a front clip from a 42 Deluxe bus. coupe that he had made into a stock car.Today I have a 42 Deluxe business coupe that needs total restoration but is pretty rust free.I've had 4 sedan coupes,5 Tudors,1 Fordor, and now this 42 Bus. coupe.I think I fell in love with the dashboards on them. They were the last cars it could be argued that old Henry had any input on.

46-48 Fords are great cars. They are the last fords to have seperate fenders, running boards. The last to have the banjo rear, torque tube and the last to have buggy springs and solid axle front ends. Truly the last cars that Henry himself had any influence on. There are alot of neat features unique to the 46 in particular. The red lettered guages, and red trim on the dash and on the ribbed grill. I have a 46 super Deluxe business coupe. I really like all the 46-48 fords, regardless of body style. They make great family cars, they have great visibilty, couch like seating etc. They came standard with the mercury 239, instead of 42 and back's 221. They sold like hot cakes and were /are very popular cars. When ford retooled the new cars for 46 they definitely hit a home run as far as I'm concerned. Lest us not forget the great looking sportsman that was a 3 year only car as well. Ford really had it together with the marketing for 46 too. I mean the There's a Ford in you future crystal ball without the picture, then just a front shot. It really built up the hype. They were also the first I believe to release new cars after the war. Many a GI bought one.

I drug home a '47 business coupe last winter from NC and I just fell in love with the roof line. I was also pleasantly surprised to discover so many parts for these cars at swap meets at very reasonable prices! I have found a lot of NOS parts for my restoration. Yes, I did say restoration. There are so few of the business coupes out there restored to original that it made me want to do it even more. I could care less what it is worth when it's done. If I wanted to restore to make money I'd sell used cars. The earlier years are so overpriced it is next to impossible for a guy raising a family to own one. That makes these cars our best kept secret! I say leave the price tags alone so the regular guy can afford something.

In my opinion, the roofline on the 41-48 business coupe is just as sexy as the earlier models and better than those that came after. Can't wait to get mine done. By the way. I could pick up my '40 frame with one arm. The '41-'48 frames are much better and heavier. Great for street rods the way they came.

Have fun with your Ford's folks & Happy New Year!
