If you're sure of the backspace you want I'd just give them that number, but it wouldn't hurt to verify terminology as you perceive it compared to how they perceive it so you don't have any disappointments or miscommunication.
I agree, and I think I paid about $220 for the pair of mine about 2 years ago.

$220 for new wheels or to have yours widened?

When I talked to Jimmie it was for new rim on my center. I also just had a memory flash (intermittent CRS I think), at the time he was only able to get the 16" hoop in 5.5" width, not 6".

On the comment about wheel measurements, it is correct to keep in mind that width is expressed for the distance within the bead seating surfaces of the rim. The overall width counting the flare outs of the rim flanges isn't a measuring standard that's meaningful. EXCEPT that when backspace (edit: actually measuring offset on either side) is measured it is taken by laying a straight edge across the flared roll rather than from the bead surface. I think that's what confuses some folks about which surface means what. (I know Tom's dialed in because we PMd about it)

For me, it was $220 for the wheels outright. His old centers welded into new hoops and shipped to me.

That was two years ago, though, so no price guarantee.

I am sure his price will be fair either way, would be nice to have new rims to start with though. Looks like the centers are just riveted to the wheel now. I took my tires over this morning to have them removed from the rims. Then I will be able to exactly measure the backspace and front measurement. Looks like my stock back spacing is about 2 1/2" now, also looks like changing that to 3 1/2 would be no problem as there is plenty of room. I can get to my 6" width by adding 1 inch to front and back measurements. Waiting today to talk to Jimmie. Thanks again to all on the Barn!
