Default Brass Tag on 8ba Flathead

As I was tearing down my spare 8ba I noticed this tag on the front of the block over the timing cover. Any idea what this is? It wasn’t on the other 8ba I have and my searching the web has come up empty.

Most likely a rebuilder's tag - not to be mistaken for an Authorized Ford Rebuilder's tag. This practice was quite common back "in the day". There were numerous engine shops doing this rebuilding on a fairly massive scale. Tagging was a way to maintain an accounting of their engines and what was done to them as well as when.

It was likely a work order number.
