As you said... A Toolmaker by trade, i have hats off to you on your resto to be that perfect point car. I myself am a toolmaker and when i complete all the hard jobs my company gives me to do on CNC and coming out to look like jewelry I totally get it when you put all your heart into the project to make look perfect in every way. Craftsman at your best! Just stunning work on one of ..in my opinion Henry's best! Ken

Just imagine if you could go back in time and pick some new '40's fresh off the showroom floor (or assembly line), transfer them to the present, and enter in a show next to a "fine point" no-expense-spared restoration. Which would get the trophy? Which would get nit-picked to death by the "experts"?

If I were the judge, the car would probably score in the mid 900 point range. It would definitely do very well for "correctness" but probably not so good for fit and finish.
Keep in mind that even high end new cars are at best a #2 when still on the showroom floor.

Just curious: If "restored" means being "returned to as new condition", then are the high point cars "over-restored" and therefore not correctly restored (thus should have points deducted)? It seems the 100% correct restoration is a rather nebulous concept, therefore open to interpretation and disagreement.
But I'm a daily driver kind of guy so fine details don't concern me.

There are deductions given for "over restored" vehicles. I'll be the first one to agree that all of my cars are well past "over restored" and therefore not exactly 100% correct per definition.
By the way, I have received deductions for over restoration numerous times. I have never argued against such deductions.
I have personally witness just two cars judged to 1000 points. One was one I had done and another was done by a friend of mine. Yes, both were "over restored".

Mike its amazing you had a resource for the spring covers. Oh wait... no its not.

Very nice. Thank you for what you do.

I hope you make a coffee table picture book of each build that you give to clients. And keep one for you.

Actually, I turned down full restoration project so I couldn't make that excuse this winter. My priority over the next few months will be to complete my book. It's close, so very close... I DO appreciate everyone's patience.

WOW! Hard to believe just how far that baby has come....a real beauty! Any chance of a 'tastefully-posed' picture of this blue/white top '40 convertible parked together in close fashion with that new blue/white-ish topped '36 convertible, BEFORE the snows cometh? DD

Amazing. This thread started 16 months ago. Did you start with the car as shown in the first photos at that time?

It's come a long way since it came out of the barn basement. One of those rare factory muscle cars back on the road. It gives a person a sense of what it might have been like to walk into the local Ford Dealer in 1940 and drool over such a desirable car. Chick magnet circa 1940. It's quit a machine indeed.

I like the radio delete, rare for a convertible! I too envy your work and look forward to the new book.

Rotor & Deuce,
Thanks for the nice comments. You certainly know I have much respect for the two of you and have learned a lot from both of you.
