Re: Women model A owners
I've often wondered that myself but if there is, it would be a cold day in hell for any would want to meet up with me. But, more sincerely, I love to meet up with some but I know none, have seen none and the only ones I've seen in any Model As are co-pilots operating the GPS.

Re: Women model A owners
My wife was the reason we bought ours... so I always refer to it as her car.
Although I do all the work, she makes the decisions.... like white walls I've ended up being her driver due to her MS. However, the large running boards are a godsend - make it very easy for her to get in. OK... way more than you asked for......... she does read the forum from time to time. |

Re: Women model A owners
My wife and I jointly own our vintage cars and generally share the driving , especially on trips, changing at every 100 miles or half day
As we get older, (I'm 70 and she's 66) it helps reduce fatigue on long journeys Keith I should have added that she also competes in hillclimbs Last edited by wensum; 03-30-2016 at 10:33 PM. Reason: fresh thoughts |

It's the wife's. She wanted it, I bought it as a mother's day gift. It is registered and insured in her name, but she has never driven it.
Can't keep her out of the MGB though. |

Re: Women model A owners
The NEED for our women to be able to drive the A is being addressed by our club. We are having a day (off road) where the women will be taught to drive them. Not sure how many divorces there will be nor whether I might loose my car but there have been occasions where He has become ill and SHE has had to drive home. Besides that, it helps get the women folk involved. Mine wants a woody. I can't say no but it will mean another garage.

Re: Women model A owners
A couple of years ago while on Junk Jaunt there was a woman in Brewster, Ne. that owned a pieced together Model A pickup that said she was a regular reader of the forum, but had never posted anything. I went through Beewster last year and did not see her pickup there and it appeared her antique shop was closed. Was unable to go on Junk Jaunt last year do to having to go to Vegas in Oct. and could not afford to do both. Rod

Our hot rod A is in the wife's name and she likes to drive it fast like in hill climbs and drags but not much on street driving.

I'm sure that if I ever found a gal who loved Model As, late 20s/30s Jazz and Swing music, played Hickory Golf and dressed the era and was drop dead gorgeous, I think I'd do just that....drop dead!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Women model A owners
In 1928, top box office actress Joan Crawford ordered and received one of the very first Ford Model A's. Screen legend Mary Pickford also was an owner/driver of one of the first of the NEW FORD models of 1928.
So women have been admiring and DRIVING the Ford Model A for quite some time ! |

Re: Women model A owners
I know that in our club, there are A LOT of women owners and drivers/mechanics. Many have inherited the cars or bought their own. In 2014, the entire board was all women.

Re: Women model A owners
My wife was the one that wanted our ( notice, I said OUR ) pick-up. I'm a hot-rod guy and the first time we went to look at it, she fell in love. When it finally came back up for sale, my wife bought it for my retirement. I'm good with it. Once I get all the bugs worked out , I'll find a parking lot and let her drive it.
I am putting an automatic in our 57 Chevy truck so she can drive it to shows when I drive the A. |

Re: Women model A owners
that how my wife and I met. She had a model A that she wasn't sure if it would run. Her late husband had restored it. I went over to take a look and it just needed a new battery. Got it running and gave her driving lessons and the rest is history. She has a 1931 deluxe roadster and a 1930 Chrysler 77 coupe and I have a 1930 deluxe roadster that is now parked in our restaurant and a 1931 deluxe coupe.

Re: Women model A owners
I also made the mistake to show her how the A works. Now I have to hide in the back.
Check my avatar. She is driving(RHD in South Africa), my son in law in the left seat, because he is too tall to drive a RPU, and me hiding in the back. She often takes the Ford or the C car shopping, dancing or to the gym, on her own. Our daughter also drives the old timers. I have attached a photo of her driving the green C car with dad relaxing in the back. Chris

Re: Women model A owners
The 1920's was a liberating time for women, advertising targeted them.
Electric starting had taken the hard work out of driving. Clothing was lighter and less restrictive. They could get out and about. Art deco was big on speed. "Speed lines" were in. All part of the roaring 20's. |

Re: Women model A owners
Chris, I thought your Chevy Phaeton would be about the same size as a Ford, but it looks to have a fair amount more room than my 28 Model A Phaeton.
In the early 60's, east of Rochester, NY, an elderly woman that went to our church still drove the 1930 Model A Coupe that she bought new. |

Re: Women model A owners
My wife Mary Alice started driving our '30 Coupe shortly after we were married (left the wedding in it) in 1964. It was her "go get groceries car" when we only could afford one modern car. Later, when I became too sick with an autoimmune disease to drive, she stepped up to the plate and drove on all our tours or when I "just needed a ride". She went home to be with our Lord in 2012.

Re: Women model A owners
Lona, my wife, and I dated in my first model A when she was 15 and I 17. She has always loved A's and after 52 yrs of marriage, we bought our '31 roadster which she drives often. She takes it to shows while I drive our Chrysler. She says it's the cutest car she has ever owned. She drives.....I get to fix it.

Re: Women model A owners
I have a 31 coupe named Mibble , my moms name. My 28 pickup is Tillie. Had a fordor named Charlottte , my sister. The 30 extended cag (not finished) name is Harvey - my wifes nickname. And the chassi and cowl with engine to be finished is Charlie - as in an angel. .
My wife does not drive any of them cause they have one of those clutch things in them. But she is the best co pilot. She does read the forum when I show her something interesting, funny of in some cases dumb. |

Re: Women model A owners
Met my wife,JudyJo in the San diego Model A club in 1972. We've both had our A's since high school. Our first outing was I'm my garage to do repair work on her coupe's differential. She has run the "Learn to Drive Your Model A" event for the women in our club for many years. She also has a S/W sedan from her mother and I have a '28 roadster pickup & cabriolet. Together we have the yard art '28 coupe/farm truck on the front lawn. LIFE IS GREAT!

Re: Women model A owners
In 1969 my wife and I came across an old lady in Birmingham Alabama that was driving a 1930 A Ford coupe. She told us that it was the only car she owned and her husband had bought it new. She told us her husband died shortly after the purchase and she has been driving the car every week to tend to her husbands grave. She had a rake, hoe and shovel in the rumble seat. Dwayne

Re: Women model A owners
You guys are so lucky to have "A" ladies.
When we got married my wife used to love going for rides in my '55 Chevy Belair. I finished building that car before I met her. Now that I have model A's and she sees how much work, time and money go into making a nice car, she wants no part of it. I recently reminded her of the familiar children's story... "the little red hen". No one wanted to help the hen prepare the wheat and help her bake the bread. But everyone wanted to eat the bread when it was baked. If she doesn't help with the work on my A's, she won't be enjoying the finished car either.

Re: Women model A owners
Well Bill, it seems all but one are men that are answering your question! So here's lady number two.
I drive a '31 Deluxe Coupe (mine), my husbands '29 pick-up, '30 Cabriolet, and our 1932 AA dump truck. Yes, it is a 1932 AA! I specify mine, his and ours because we both had Model A's when we met. We've been through three others that we have bought and sold but we only have so much room and money! I don't read the forum regularly but do get on here when I'm looking for an answer I can't find elsewhere. However, my spouse reads it quite often and shares interesting threads with me. We're both MAFCA senior judges... you might enjoy our dinner conversations! He say's he's a lucky guy, but I think I'm the lucky one. Thanks for the question, I just wish there were more ladies in the hobby so we could talk about cars instead of their grandchildren... no offense. |

Re: Women model A owners
The 1930 Phaeton in my avatar belongs to my wife Merrily. She doesn't drive it much but when she does, it gets interesting. Like at the gas station, she drives pass the pump so that she can put gas in it from the rear. One evening while driving her phaeton, as we approached a new round-about in the street, she drove right across the middle of the round-about. I asked her why she drove over the middle of the round about and she replied, "there's too dam many other things to do in this Model A than to also pay attention to driving around these ridiculous roundabouts." When we got married over 50 years ago, our second car then (which she drove daily) was our 1929 Tudor. And we still drive the same 1929 Tudor. In the photo, she is cleaning the wheels of our 1929 Tudor
