Quality floor jacks
Any experiences to share on good quality floor jacks. Looking for a 2 ton, preferably aluminum floor jack. Made in the USA preferred. I see Sears has an SEG jack, anyone no where they are made.

Re: Quality floor jacks
My Sears two ton failed after 40 years and I replaced with a Power Zone 3 ton combination of alum. and steel. Think it is assembled in the USA and I'm very pleased with it so far.

Re: Quality floor jacks
I have a Sears brand for over ten years now and when I look at the label it says "Made in China". I also have a Harbor Freight low profile rapid pump and I use that one all the time as it's just quicker than the Sears. Just my two cents.

Re: Quality floor jacks
I have a Sears jack as well. Mine is an aluminum "Fast-Pump" model, and it works very well. I believe it was made in China. I also have a smaller Harbor Freight jack I bought for use when I was vintage racing. Early on, it developed a leak in the hydraulic system that I ignore, just filling the reservoir when needed.
I think you are doing the right thing by checking how others have fared. Let's face it, just about everything these days is made overseas. If you could even find a new "Made in USA" jack, it would probably be horribly expensive. The best you can do is to shop quality, not country of origin. |

Re: Quality floor jacks
I've used a NAPA 3½ ton floor jack for 9 years and it works fine. I don't think any of it is aluminum though.

Re: Quality floor jacks
I have owned several of what I would consider the cheaper jacks. They work fine but seem to not hold up well over the long haul, I use the a lot! Last spring I searched online for a quality jack (based on ratings), found one I liked, it cost a little over twice what I had previously paid. Believe it was close to $300. So far I am very happy with it.

Re: Quality floor jacks
I have a big old Chinese one Larin brand I bought over ten years ago in one of those wholesale clubs, all the marking are worn off but it seems to be a long frame of a least 2 tons, only problem I have is the steel wheels loosen up once in a while, no problem lifting a Ford Expedition.

Re: Quality floor jacks
I also use a Larin and it has worked fine for over 10 years but it is a heavy beast. FYI: HF has their light weight, fast lift jacks on sale right now. With a coupon the 1.5T is only $70.

Re: Quality floor jacks
I have an expensive made in U.S.A. Lincoln and a cheap HF. The HF outlasted the Lincoln. It took FOREVER to find a seal kit for my Lincoln but at least I can fix it now.

I have a 1953 Blackhawk 2.5 ton. Made in USA. It is steel but not very heavy.
I see there are some vintage ones on ebay. I don't like aluminum jacks around the shop. OK for in the pits wnen you are in a hurry. |

I've a 1940's Walker Big Boy i inherited from an uncle. 'Tis heavy! Going to restore it to its former glory then use it. There's a fella on the Garage Journal, Hiball, who can supply rebuild kits for older jacks.

Re: Quality floor jacks
I have a 2 ton aluminum NAPA jack. Made in China (all NAPA jacks I saw were china made). Paid 200.00 for it, lasted 1 year. Pump shot, will not lift any load. Took it to Napa and they said "Sorry, 6 month warranty". I was not very happy. Went to Costco, they had a very similar (different brand) 2 ton aluminum jack. Made in China. Half the price at 100.00. I asked them what the warranty was. They told me if I ever had a problem with it, just bring it back.
I am just a hobbyist and do not use a floor jack very often. I cannot justify a 600.00 US made floor jack. I do have an old steel jack that works great, I like the aluminum for traveling with or using in my gravel driveway

Harbor Freight
I have used their 2 ton aluminum low profile racing jacks for years. Just gave (2) to my friend Joe in Holbrook, AZ because I just bought (2) three ton models ... I have changed a lot of trailer tires & worked on the trailer recently in 5 degree weather - they never let me down ... Jim |

Re: Quality floor jacks
Anybody ever fix one of the HF aluminum racing jacks? Mine will leak down under load. Haven't taken it apart yet. Or maybe just junk it?

Re: Quality floor jacks
I use a 30 yr old Sears 3 ton floor jack. Still going strong. All the Sears stuff in Chinese. A buddy did some research when he bought his new jack and he got one from NAPA that was American made.

Re: Quality floor jacks
I use a 1 1/2 T Hein-Werner that was part of a package deal when I bought out an auto body shop to start my own business. It was probably 40 years old then. I rebuilt the pump a year ago because it wouldn't pump up or hold anything up. It is still going strong. According to the internet, I can only get 2 T jacks now and a Hein-Werner will cost at least $350 to start.

Re: Quality floor jacks
An update on what I found out about currently available "value" jacks. I checked Sears and they have one called an SEG for $350. Research turned up that it was supplied by Harbor Frt. Checked NAPA, same size jack, $230. Found they are supplied by Harbor Frt also. Got the same thing Sears and NAPA had from harbor frt for $130. Apparently HF has a plant in you know where that makes all the "value" jacks. The HF ones were so cheap I got 32# almn racing jack for $60., and 52# almn racing jack for $130., so now I have 2 for the price one NAPA jack, and they are the same darn thing.

Re: Quality floor jacks
russcc,
Strange you are going through the same hunt I just completed. My Sears 2 ton Quick-lift began leaking, it's about 4 years old. Checked all fittings, all was tight. Checked on line for a rebuild kit or replacement power (lift) unit. All were listed as "no longer available". Called Sears, they said tuff, only 2 year warranty. Went on to order a Hein-Werner, made in USA. Ordered a 3 ton, not real cheap, but it will be better than more throw-aways. Amazon sells them with "No Shipping" charge, should be here by next Monday.
