Default White Wall Tires????

Why should I hate them? Seems most people have a joke or two to make about them. I don't have w/w on my ride, just wondered what the deal is with others not liking them.

They look ugly on a dark car. That's my opinion.
The eye is draw to the bright white that contrasts the dark car, thus making others look at your tires before they see your car. On your dark green truck all you would see be white walls.

There was a time not so long ago that whitewalls were the thing and normal and no one paid much attention to just the whitewalls. Now that they've gone by the wayside years ago, unless you have a classic, they stand out, I would find out why certain owners back in the 30s preferred whitewalls and paid the extra cost for them. I do agree that blackwalls on certain models look good but to me that depends upon the wheels and the color of them. I'd rather have straw wheels instead of the Apple Green but....that wasn't the paint scheme back then and that the pin stripping is also Apple Green.

No need to hate them.

The argument is that Model As never came from the factory with them, so they do not belong on a Model A. By that logic, neither does an overdrive, cast iron brake drums, an electrical safety fuse, an alternator, any cylinder bore other than standard, insert bearings, safety glass on sides or rear winows, etc.

Personally, I don't think they look good on a Model A unless you are Liberace or Elton John.

Newly made ganster movies all you see are Model A's with whitewalls,...kind of unrealistic ?? I think 90% of all cars look better with black walls tires, no model A came from factory with white walls, option at dealer .I LOL when I see a AA truck with whites..good post to start arguments ?

White wall tires on Model A's were not typical until the 1950's when people started to restore them. In that 1950's era every car had white wall tires if the owner could afford them. There was a lot of emphasis on making Model A's "fancy". Stainless steel spoke covers, spotlights, and other 1950's era gee gaws made their way onto many "restorations.

I have white walls on my Model A because that is how it came to me. When they wear out it will get black walls.

Your car your choice, black or white... I think many Model A that have more color to then look better sometimes with whitewalls, some like mine which is all black does not. Enjoy your car and your choice.

From Wiki:

The use of whitewall rubber for wheels has been traced to a small tire company in Chicago called Vogue Tyre and Rubber Co that made them for their horse and chauffeur drawn carriages in 1914. Early automobile tires were made of pure natural rubber with various chemicals mixed into the tread compounds to make them wear better. The best of these was zinc oxide, a pure white substance that increased traction and also made the entire tire white. However, the white rubber did not offer sufficient endurance, so carbon black was added to the rubber and greatly increasing tread life. Using carbon black only in the tread produced tires with inner and outer sidewalls of white rubber. Later, entirely black tires became available, the still extant white sidewalls being covered with a somewhat thin, black colored layer of rubber. Should a black sidewall tire have been severely scuffed against a curb, the underlying white rubber would be revealed; it is in a similar manner that raised white letter (RWL) tires are made.

The status of whitewall tires versus blackwall tires was originally the reverse of what it later became, with fully black tires requiring a greater amount of carbon black and less effort to maintain a clean appearance these were considered the premium tire; since the black tires first became available they were commonly fitted to many luxury cars through the 1930s. During the late-1920s gleaming whitewalls contrasted against darker surroundings were considered a stylish, but high-maintenance feature. The popularity of whitewalls as an option increased during the 1930s. On April 6, 1934, Ford introduced whitewall tires as an $11.25 option on all its new cars. Automobile designs incorporating streamlining eventually rendered the two-sided whitewall obsolete.

Some people don't like them because of principle others don't like them because they can't afford the difference in price so it's easier to hate them !

My green 30 murray fordor has whitewalls. My 31 tudor has blackwalls. My 29 rat rod has 18" 1932 wheels on the front and 16" 1935 wheels on the rear all blackwall. All the wheels roll. To each his own.

Thumbs up Re: White Wall Tires????

For the right car white walls look good! And speaking of while walls: Recently I caught site of a 30-31 Model-A coupe in an original
1932 photograph. The coupe had on 18" wire wheels with white wall
tires! Holey-Moley, doesn't that guy who owns the car know you can not
do that?!? He has got to wait at least another 20 years or more.........

Bob-A

PS: Check out www.shorpy.com , pic #12 back from latest pic. On right
side of photo look through the plate glass shop window. Don't forget to
enlarge the pic. Super cool scene!

It's a simple little antique car and black wall tires keep a snappy reverence to historical preservation.
