Default Distributor bolt

How tight does one tighten the distributor bolt on the side of the block?

Just tight enough to hold it in place. The pin should keep it from turning. Make sure the distributor is fully seated in the block. The screw fits in the groove in the distributor keeping it from moving up and down.

There is no bolt on the side of the block. Are you talking about the one on the head. Is so just snug not real tight. To tight will bind the distributor shaft.
