Would be great thats for sure! I have to get back to "Big Sky Country" first! My handle is a carryover from another forum about ford trucks and an earlier time in my life when I lived there. I flew the nest and now live in Washington but I'm aching to get back one day! My Model A is from there and lots of family still in Montana. Visiting Montana and Texas in one summer would certainly be awesome!

Yep, definitely beautiful country! One of our local club members is from Montana and he likes to talk about "God's Country" alot. Guess it wouldn't be too far out of your way to drive through Montana on your way to Texas. Another local guy actually drove his Model T roundtrip from Austin, Texas to Alaska - talk about a challenge at 30 mph!!!

I see you are from Tacoma - we attended the MARC/MAFCA Joint Meet (National Convention) held in Tacoma back in 1994 and really enjoyed our visit. We got to tour Harold LeMay's collection when it was still partially in his backyard, plus a school gymnasium he bought to store some of his cars in. Harold was a man after my own heart! I understand the MAFCA National Convention is being held again in Tacoma next year hosted by the Gallopin' Gerties Chapter.

Shipping it should not be more than $250 if you know how to go about getting a decent quote from a freight company. My biggest questions are, who is going to strap it to a pallet and is there a business the freight company can pick it up at. Also if I won are you going to restamp my engine numbers ( and make them look correct)before it leaves Texas? The engine number serves as the VIN here. If not I would try to sell it someone close by the area it is in and put the money towards my original engine. Rod

Rod: If you won the engine raffle you would have the option of picking it up in person or arranging to have it shipped - it would be necessary for you to make all the shipping arrangements including finding someone willing to palletize it or "box" it for safe shipping.

I would think if you won a $5,000 engine by spending $5.00 you could spend an additional $20 to buy your own engine stamps and stamp your own number on it. Otherwise, since you would be the owner of it, your could sell it if you chose to.

Tom, glad you enjoyed the visit - actually those of us down south refer to it as the "War Between the States". We'll keep your comment in mind and should someone up your way win the engine let them contact you to see if they'll spring for the petrol.

You didn't say how long it took you to drive across - funny story: many years ago I was working in Dallas and we had a new employee who had just transferred in from Philadelphia. The first week he was there I caught him looking at a map and asked what he was doing. He replied, "I'm new to Texas and think I'll drive out to El Paso this weekend and do some exploring." When I told him he needed to pack a couple of lunches since it was 635 miles one way and would take 9 hours of driving each way he nixed the idea. Even though Alaska can now claim the "biggest" state, lots of people forget how big Texas is - Texarkana, TX is closer to Chicago than it is to El Paso, TX. It's 813 miles from Texarkana to El Paso and 794 miles from Texarkana to Chicago. It's 900 miles from the southern tip at Brownsville to Texline, TX just northwest of Amarillo. Nice drive nonstop if your have 14 hours to kill. We all know that if the ice melted in Alaska we would still be biggest!

My son and his wife were stationed at Eielson Air Force Base for three and a half years and lived outside Fairbanks in North Pole, AK. We came up to visit in early July - when the 4th rolled around I asked my son, "What time do the fireworks start?" He confirmed my suspicion that there were no fireworks since it never got dark. Hard to sleep when it's 4:00 am and looks like noon.

The following March he called me one morning and said, "What's the weather like in Georgetown today Dad?" I replied, "Guess it's 70 degrees, why?" He said, "How does 68 below zero sound?" Told me he had his wife make a pot of scalding coffee, poured him a cup and went out onto the porch and tossed the contents into the air - WHOOOOSH! - the contents instantly vaporized and nothing hit the ground. He said he got my granddaughter's bubble blowing stuff and blew some bubbles - they landed on the porch and when he thumped them with his finger they shattered like a lightbulb!

Really enjoyed visiting your beautiful state though - can see why it's hard to keep highways paved and smooth with the permafrost heaving.

Not that it matters much, but curious...

1) Is there a minimum number of tickets that need to be sold to make the raffle valid? (e.g. some raffles around here need to sell X tickets or they revert to a 50/50)

2) Is there a maximum number of tickets to be sold?

A numbers guy - just wondering the odds... although in reality it's really 50% - I either win or I don't...

3) Who/what is the beneficiary of the raffle proceeds?

To try and answer your questions:
1 - this is an absolute raffle like a "no reserve auction" meaning there is no minimum number of tickets that must be sold in order for the drawing to occur; someone's ticket will be drawn and they will win the engine - the drawing will be held on June 8th at the awards banquet concluding the 50th Annual Model A Ford Texas Tour (statewide convention).
2 - There is no maximum number of tickets to be sold (our club hopes to sell at least enough tickets to cover our cost of buying the freshly rebuilt engine though).
3 - The beneficiary of the raffle proceeds is our club which bought the engine from the rebuilder; we are a non-profit corporation and a 20 year old chapter of the Model A Ford Club of America.

Hope that answers your questions and we appreciate your participation. We have hosted the statewide Texas Tour twice before and have had good success in raffling off newly rebuilt engines.

Be sure to include your email address when you send in your money so I can confirm receipt of the funds and send you your ticket numbers. We will announce the winner on June 8th and hopefully I'll get to give you a phone call if you're the lucky winner. A $5,000 inserted engine for a $5 ticket isn't such a bad deal! Or if they are smart, they'll but five tickets for $20 to increase their odds and possibly win a $5,000 inserted engine for a $4 ticket!

I just got off the phone with the engine builder and what he meant by stating "one piece bearings" refers to the fact that most engine rebuilders who do inserted engines have historically used what he calls "old technology" meaning they use MG bearings that are not wide enough to fill the gap in the block and used two separate bearings on each half. He uses a single bearing on each half (obviously you can't have a one piece bearing that wraps around the crank). He pointed out another advantage in doing so in that the old technology resulted in a gap between the two bearings at the rear main; his single bearing fills the entire space resulting in no gap.

Yes but doesn't this gap between each bearing create such a wonderful oil-well...in fact 2 oil-wells on the rear main which we know takes the biggest beating.
It seems to me that after each shutdown, motor oil settles and is trapped in these wells between the bearing shells for days or months maybe, always ready to provide instant lubrication upon start up.
