It is sometimes necessary to trim a little off the outer lip of the backing plates AND the inner edge of the drums, but not always. There is nothing wrong with shims, just keep the axle nuts tight. If someday you have the rear end apart, machine .090-.100" off the outer ends of the housings to eliminate the need for shims. Question, if you are that close to the V8 garage, why don't you just drive over and talk with them? Can't hurt!

Furthermore, I kept burning out the switches until I gave in and bought one of the relays they recommend.
