Installing a '53 flathead in a '36 Ford
Seems to me I read here that installing a newer ('53) engine in a 36 Ford presented clearance problems , in particualr with the water pumps and the stock fan hitting the radiator. I've got a 39 in there now and want to put the new 53 in there with a T-5. Any thoughts , suggestions etc ? Thanks !

Someone should write a book on this subject. It's probably the most asked question on the barn. And there are oly 2 ways to do it, the easy abd the hard way.

I should apologize for that, This is the easy way.
Replace water pumps with Speedway early pumps. cut the seal area off the early crank pulley. install 1/4 spacer behind generator. install SBC points dist. early truck or merc pan and bellhousing. This should get you on the road. |

Topster, do a search here and read the many posts already here on this subject that have been discussed so many times, and in the end you will probably not want to spend the time/money to do this the way Ol' Ron is discribing as the easy way or the hard way.

Re: Installing a '53 flathead in a '36 Ford
Just looked at a 36 pickup yesterday with a 8ba ,looked like it belonged there, only problem he had was the pan hit the tie rod a little,I think he just bent it down some ,best thing I believe is to get a truck oil pan, made a little different ,fan fit ok also.As far as the t-5 ,not familiar with this...

Re: Installing a '53 flathead in a '36 Ford
The picture below is of an 8BA in a '36 coupe. The fan mount has obviously been built from scratch, but looks like it uses some factory Ford fan mount parts mounted from the original GENERATOR mounting spot on the front of the intake manifold. The belt is driven by a double-shieve pulley mounted on the alternator. Looks like a lot of thought went into this one, yet looks relatively simple in concept. DD
