Default '40 Ignition Lock Cylinder

A question for the '40 expert. I have always been irritated by the way my ignition cylinder will be in any one of a dozen different orientations when I go to put the key in. Is this a normal and correct way for it to function, or should it be in the same orientation, and stay there when the key is removed? If this is not correct, how do I remedy the situation?

Here is a picture I took for another lock problem. I think your situation may have to do with the recess in the lock and the pin that secures it. The pin stops the rotation of the cylinder. '39 lock on left '40 lock on right.
Hope this helps!

If the entire lock cylinder is rotating in the housing then the locating pin on the bottom is the problem, the key should only be removable in one position (locked ) once the key is removed the cylinder should stay in the locked position if it does not then the cylinder is bad. with the cylinder in hand it takes some gentle effort on the key to make the cylinder change from lock to unlock.

Make sure there is a recess in the lock cylinder for the pin to go into and stop the rotation. I don't use the pin. I use a tap and put threads in the hole and then use a set screw to hold the lock.
