Default Cam gear conversion

I am rebuilding the 32 engine. The cam has the original fiber gear. I have a nice bolt on style gear. I was wondering if it could be converted to press on. A steel ring could be pressed in the gear after machining the center out. I am leary of the maybe 90 year old fiber gears. Has anybody tried this?

If your cam is an original 32 cam, it is steel instead of cast iron, and was used by early hot rod types because it could be welded up and reground for different profiles. It would probably be easier to get a later cam that takes the bolt on gear then finding an aluminum press on gear. I have never seen one. If you are not building a performance engine, there is nothing wrong with a fiber gear, they are quieter. New fiber gears are plentiful.
There is a KR Wilson tool for pressing the new gears on in the exact place for valve timing.

I will stay with the fiber gear. I found some for sale so I don’t have to use the old one from JobLot that I have had for 40 years.
Is it a heavy press to get off and on?

As Kiwi Tony mentioned, Ford also made press-on aluminum gears . . . work really well when you want to modify the cam timing a bit.

I am never going to drive the engine. I have sold all the cars it could have gone in. It has taken me over 40 years to get all the correct parts. I am going to put together and get it running and then probably sell it.
