Default 272 Tstat housing

Replacing the thermostat on my engine. I see the bypass pipe on the thermostat housing has a couple of pinholes in it. Is it worth trying to repair, or is it a separate piece from the housing that could be replaced? Thanks

There are aftermarket replacements - not too expensive if if I remember correctly. You old one can be repaired by replacing the tube.

Carpenter has repros, so I assume that the other suppliers also have them.

Thanks, I would like to repair this one if I could. Still has part number and all. So, the pipe is separate from the housing? Just maybe a new copper pipe?

Here is a great DIY method to repair/replace the pipe in the T-stat housing courtesy of HRR.

NAPA part# 660-1580 OR 4 Seasons part# 84716 ( handled by Federated) is the pipe replacement for those thermostat housings.

Several decades ago, my '55 bypass tube was bad, so I cut it off and drilled out the portion that was inserted into the cast iron thermostat housing. Then I went and found a piece of junk tubing that happened to be the right size. Hammered it in, then brazed it to the cast iron. I think it is still on the car, although I do have one or two extra good used ones.

Thanks, I went to hardware and plumbing stores, and 5/8 tubing is few and far between. I haven't found one yet. Thanks again.

If you look at the link from bfdinardo you will see that the tubing I purchased was online. I could not source anything locally. Oldmics has a link for a very nice insert because it has the hump on the end to help seal the heater hose to the tube. I bought a 3 foot length or so and it was about the price from Napa for just the one insert. The piece I bought from online metals had a much thicker wall than original. Most of the reason these tubes need to be replaced is because the wall just did not hold up to corrosion... but let's be honest, I highly doubt that anyone thought back in 1955 that in 2019 there would be so much demand for these original parts.
