Default Shoebox hood hinges

This has probably come up before but a "search" didn't bring it up.

The '49-'51 hoods do not have counter-balanced spring hinges like Ford's same period trucks have. As it stands now, the hood is somewhat heavy, if not cumbersome to lift and once up you need to use a rod to keep it up. Has anyone put counter-balanced springs on a shoebox hood that did not require major sheet metal surgery or welding?

Thanks

Tom

What year do you have? They changed the hinges for 50. The 49 are cumbersome to open and hard to adjust. If you go to Shoeboxford.com they might have some better answers for you.
