Default knocking noise

Last night after work I heard the start of this rythmic knocking sound. Not a massive noise but more like maybe a water pump I hope. I've never heard a waterpump go dont know what I should be listening for. To many knocks in a row to be a componet of crank rods etc. I have all new bearings when we rebuilt motor. Noise sounds like it may be up front or top half of motor. I guess she just want to be in the garage the rest of the fall. Thanks everyone again what a rough introductions into flatheads

Pull each spark plug wire, one at a time and see of the knock goes away.

Thanks for some useful help info. I love this sound of the flathead and I'm as stubborn as an ox when I like something. I just hope its easy and can enjoy the rest of the fall before winter hits

Use a long screwdriver as a stethoscope to isolate the noise. Check around the fuel pump, the newer pumps are noisy.

did you use adjustable lifters? I have a 51 Merc with an old set of Johnson adjustable lifters and one "self" adjusted itself, finally had to stake the lifter screw after adjusting it for the second time and it has been alright since then

Could be the armature in the generator hitting the 'poles'. Put your hand on the generator when it is making this noise....you will feel it. When water pumps make a noise, you can 'fix' this with a good squirt of WD 40 or similiar when the engine is running. Use the thin tube so you get right into the pump.
