Default New engine does great, but still....

..got noise issues

Engine is running great without driving..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXk931Y4AaQ

But once driving its noisy
(camera doesnt get noises to well...)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEnQdXu9_g4

schifting through the gears

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSrcZMclI4U
without wood

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0NNCCAOFxA

it is so loud, i cant go distance like that....

its with gear and without.
is with clutch an without
allways when driving
easy to detect once going more than 20mph
even if i switch off engine.

i even loosened float -a-motor
and took gum-gearbox-carrier out (to change engine-angle)
angel of engine is about 3 degrees
tried with and without 70-pound trunk....

reopenend gearbox again and could find things to be wrong.

took out rear to find out about U-joint and roller bearing in drive shaft...

all seemed to be ok

will change driveshaft bearing tomorrow anyway.
cant change U-joint as Vendor couldtn deliver...

would love to hold a spare gearbox and a spare rear,
but sadly no spare parts available over here.

i m close to tears....

please help me

thank you so much

best regrds christoph

Christoph, is it a consistent noise, that is every revolution of the drive shaft makes a noise? Or does it just happen every once in awhile?

I am not hearing any particular noise that shouldn't be there. Because as you said it is hard to catch with your camera sound.

Describe the kind of noise, and try to maybe get closer to where the unwanted sound is for a more adequate taping for sound with your crmera.

There are a lot of things in an engine that can make it noisy, just depends where, and what kind on noise.

The last thing, take some video of the rest of your car, what I can see looks like a excellent job of restoration!

schifting through the gears
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSrcZMclI4U

once in 3rd you can hear
(better to spot once off throttle after 30sec)

id call it "rattern"
seems to be a "clonk"-noise with the speed of driveshaft

cant be engine
(even appears if driving but being out of gear and engine is off)

might be
- rear part of gearbox
- u -joint
- driveshaft-bearing
(I guess)

only part i hold is driveshaft bearing....
as vendor couldnt deliver U-joint.

im green for you in us , as everyone having a spare-gearbox and
a spare-rear-end and lots of parts in the back-yard
;-))

would have loved to go for FIVA-Rallye in two days.

thank you for your nice words Herm
(nice job doesnt help once car does strange noises)

I think a lot of us would like to help, but there are so many places the A can make noise from with out being there it is just a guess.

i dont think its your problem but unscrew the speedometer cable from the torque tube side and try it. also run it up on stands then maybe it might be easier to check around with a listening device

I can't hear or see too much from the videos either. It doesn't seem to be engine related though. What did the u-joint feel like ? There should be no rotational movement/slack in it. If it moves side to side thats normal. I agree with Mitch, I'd recommend jacking it up too, that'll give a better listen and look-see.

"id call it "rattern"

That's what I hear also. It's not real loud, but almost sounds like the U-joint scraping the housing. I assume the inner cup that the driveshaft tucks into is in place? Twice I've heard of that piece being forgotten. Did you look at the inner part for signs of scraping?

Thank you for your ideas.

Sure i tried it without speedocable (which is one year old), but
its way to loud for the sound of the speedocable (and grease
started to come out of flange this time )

Bought me a real stethoscope (up to now, all of my life i was
tinkering such cases with a screwdriver to be held to my ear).

Tried stethoscope (while son was driving and with car rested on
stands too) and it seemed that noise is out of above mentioned
area (but sadly transported a little too)

What do you mean here??
As the cup is bolted to the backside of the gearbox - how could it
not sit in place???? Is there an direction of mounting it????
No, i did not look for wear inside , but will do that in some hours
once i take it apart again

thank you
Christoph

Check drawing on page A124 of the new Snyder's Catalog to see if you're missing anything.

Part #25 is called the inner cap, and I've heard twice where someone forgot to install it when putting the car back together. Also there is a gasket on each side of the mounting flange for it.

Mine was one without the inner cap/cover. I drove it for years without knowing it or any problems except for a bad clutch chatter. Once I went looking for the chatter problem I eventually found out this cover was missing. It wasn't too hard to find a replacement. Thats one thing I like about these old girls, parts are pretty readily available.

Problem Solved !!

What happened.

When we changed engines, we took out engine
with transmission and U-Joint .
We put the gearbox to the new engine on the bench
and did a test drive there.
Just run each gear once for some seconds.

U-Joint was not supported there and was somewhat forced to
the outside by centrifugal force.

This bent the thick washer and (once in the car) the U-joint
was able to touch the housing (Part25 )

I would have installed a new U-Joint, but vendor didnt deliver

I put in a new washer and all the worse sounds are gone

We will start tomorrow to our first big tour this year.

Will tell you about ...

Thank you for your support

Best regards from Frankfurt
Christoph
