Default starter change

Hey guys,
Im getting ready to replace the starter on the roadster. i read on another post that i need to pull the motor to remover the starter. is this the case. I can see that the steering column may be it the way but pulling the motor sounds excessive. How about some guidance. Thanks

You do not have to remove the motor. You just have to remove the wires and three bolts and out it comes. You do need a extension on your socket to get at the back bolt but it is an easy job and should not take more than a few minutes.

Watch your bolt length's. Put them back in the same holes if they are different

If you have the original steering gear, you should have no problem. If you by chance have one of the F100 conversions, you will need to remove the water inlet to get enough room to snake it out.

The best thing about wrong / bad advice is that you learn to listen to your car and your own mind and not those who want to always have an answer, regardless of their wealth of in-experience. The 3 bolts should be 1 inch long and not any longer.

Got it done guys.....easy peazy. As suspected the shaft is bent on the one I took off. New one is much better. Can the old one be straightened?

Pull the dipstick for added clearance. As mentioned, the job is easy. While the starter is out you can check the teeth on the ring gear, and you could fish around the bottom of the cover with a magnet for lost hardware from peoples past experience.

Yup, with a press, some Vee blocks and a surface gauge, it can b done or take it to a workshop. You could even buy a new one:

Here are 3 pictures of an armature straightener that I made. It's easy to make and does a great job of straightening bent shafts.

See #6 in this link to a past thread on bent armatures.

Sorry Pluck...I reread the post that I was referring to......as it turns out the nice gentleman was referring to another reason why my starter was locking up and a possible remedy to that problem. My apologies.
