Default 1947 Ford transmission

Going to dig into this problem tomorrow. Just looking for some possible feed back. Out for a cruise today and geared down to 2nd and got a loud knocking noise that appears to come from the trans. Talking off in 1st gear same noise very loud can be felt in floor. Same thing in 2nd gear but goes away when clutched depresses. Shifting inti 3 Rd gear runs great no noises and very smooth. Knocking noise is present in 1st second and reverse. Noise is very loud on light acceleration. In 3rd gear as I push the clutch in and out you can feel the clutch engaging freely. The noise almost feels like a bolt has backed of and is hitting but in 3rd it is perfect Any ideas Thanks

At this point is is conjecture, but it sounds like a tooth off the main drive or cluster gear.

Please keep us posted on what you find.

40cpe is most likely correct. You can confirm this with a bit of quick work. Drain down the trans. Disconnect the shifting linkage. Remove the side cover. The broken tooth may have come out with the drained oil (use a screen to catch any debris for inspection) or it may still be sitting inside the gearbox.

You may or may not be able to see the broken tooth depending on the rotation of the gears. With the rear of the car up on jack stands, and the clutch fully depressed, you can rotate the gearset to watch every gear for damage.

If you discover what we already suspect, figure on removing the trans for a full rebuild.
