1947 Convertible

2 questions:
My '47 Super Deluxe convertible coupe has tan plastic across the dash and speaker area. But I have seen a few cars with this piece in chrome. Is this aftermarket, or did Ford offer both?

Is there a way for the hood on my car to open wider? It does't seem to open up enough to work under it, especially to reach in to add a quart of oil.

I believe the chrome was aftermarket. Currently Bob Drake sells the chrome dash pieces. As for your hood opening you might have weak springs.

My 47 has a chrome dash, I believe it is the original, now the rest of it not so much, lol, the interior was customized in 1968.

Okay there is some debate on this maybe....

But those tan "plastic" pieces are "Soy" bio-plastic.

If you have the tan ones don't replace them.

The chrome was aftermarket. From the factory they came with the plastic. Drake used to sell the metal pieces unchromed and you could paint them the same color as the original plastic. It worked good as they didn't warp from the heat of the sun.

I was wondering about the glare effect when you have the top down?

BTW, I'm not keen of the look of the soy plastic on my dash either.

It reminds me of Grandpa's hearing aid

Fortyonerag, never had a problem with sun glare even with the sun hitting over your shoulder.

The chrome dash plastic is definitely aftermarket. They all had soybean plastic of different shades according to year and model. Never chrome.

Not in all cases. If you have the Early Ford V-8 Club's 41-48 book you will find that there were different colors of the dash plastic on different models and years. Pages 3-7 to 3-14 tells the different colors on the models. The beige(tan) was probably the most common, but there was maroon , brown, ivory and blue gray metallic.

Interesting. I thought it might be an issue, but now you say otherwise, I'll have a look for my 41.
