Default valve seat damage

went check out a couple of engine blocks a high school buddy acquire for a project and was wondering what may have caused this damage to the valve seats. Looks about .050 to .060 deep and affected some intakes and some exhausts

Didn't think of water, doesn't have the normal pitting.The block has other issues like multiple heli-coiled head bolts holes.

Those are good looking welds. Either welded seat rings in or built up with Stellite directly.
All common stuff in the "olden dayz"
