Re: Aluminum heads.
We do many builds using aluminum heads with conventional head bolts, not all builds automatically get studs. Many customers want the bolts.
There are "pros and cons" to either, a search up here will show how many feel about certain fasteners! I will add this, whenever we use bolts we DO use "special" head bolt washers on BOTH aluminum and iron heads, these keep the head of the bolts from trying to "gall" the head material while torquing. No add'l machining required on the heads (assuming the bolt bosses are all good), simply install the washers with the bolts. (Add) We stock/sell a number of new OEM style Flathead head bolt kits WITH the washers, the photo below shows a few of the bolts and washers! The bolt sets, being OEM parts, are reasonably priced. With some aluminum heads the factory bolt lengths may not be correct, in these instances we use a full ARP head bolt kit. These are more expensive however! Thanks, Gary in N.Y. P.S. We also get requests for stainless head bolts/washers, but these are mostly for the SB/BB Chevy platforms.

Re: Aluminum heads.
The bolts that I used are grade 8 from Caterpillar. I believe that Walt Dupont uses bolts from Fastenal for his engines. Here is the sheet from Cat. I used 48 2 1/2 inch bolts for the aluminum head. The bolts for the iron heads are shown as well. Ed

8BA with early style aluminum heads. You will be glad you used bolts when you have to remove a head. Last edited by 19Fordy; 12-23-2015 at 11:18 AM. |

Re: Aluminum heads.
Thanks Ed. The chart is what I needed. Did you get all 48 bolts the same size, or did you break it down like in your red notes

I use studs on all my 59X style engines - only ARP stuff.
