1940 or today?

Thought you would enjoy this picture made earlier today. The background is my friend's Meadows sawmill, flat belt driven with his M Farmall. Hope this takes some of you back to fond memories of an earlier time, a momentary break from the world's current woes. Enjoy

Looks great! But the tires have more tread that i'd expect for for 1940. There's only 3 give-aways that it might not be an old picture.

Interesting. One imagines that in 1940 that view/scene was open fields.

Dad used to bring us as kids "over the meadow and through the woods" cutting diagonally in the backwoods of Bridgewater, MA from his childhood home to that of his grandparents. Perhaps half a mile as the crow flies. Dad still knew the path from the landmarks.

"This we called the cowpond" he said. Small pond perhaps 100 feet surrounded by woods. "Dad how did the cows get to the pond by this narrow path?"

"They didn't - most came across the open field - all which you see has grown up since I was a kid."

I marveled.

Now having pictures of when my house in NH was built almost 40 years ago - and comparing it to now I can see how it might happen.

We recently took down a good sized tree - got perhaps almost a cord of wood out of it for the woodshed. I counted 34 rings. It was not even a tree when the house was built.

Nature DOES want it all back. And it will get it EVENTUALLY.

For us for now it is just a "loan."

Does the M have steel wheels or is it on rubber?

Great pic but the truck needs a load of fresh-sawn lumber in the bed.

M is on rubber, but the WC Allis Chalmers has one of each on the rear!

In my country it's the opposite. Less trees and the people aren't even cutting them for wood. Only because they're taller than a human & it insults them somehow. Or they think it'll fall on them. Not sure where they got that idea.

Tires aren't had-it. Headlight reflectors are too shiny, The focus of the camera is too consistent? (many old cameras didn't keep the focus as sharp in the distance if they were focused on the foreground)
