The engine was never running. It was just switched on to mess with the gauge and if it was functioning or not. In a daily or weekly driving situation, turning off the ignition switch kills the engine. If one is just working with the gauges or igniton, it is fairly easy to leave the switch in the 'on' position after we are done with our tests....

STARTED right up!!!! Runs perfect. But I want this vehicle to be able to go down to California to a woodie get together or whatever. Maybe the points and coil survived?

Hang the key on a nail by the garage door.
Make a point of looking to see if it is hanging there when you go in the house for the night.

Wire your headlights to the ign switch . If you miss the lights being on it will kill the battery usually before any ignition (expensive ) damage . Of course your battery will take a beating , but a recharge or jump is easy .
CRS only gets worse

As Kevin already answered, one of the small wires connected to the coil. Either the wire from the ignition switch to the coil or the wire from the coil to the distributor points. In your latest case the points must have been open, lucky you! Kevin's suggestion for a cut-out switch is a good one, but I would still remove the coil wire while trouble shooting. You could spend a considerable amount of time working around the car during the day and under the right conditions it doesn't take long to damage something with the ignition on.

If it were me the follow-up would be when I call AAA for a jump and the driver notices that my new cut-off switch was in the off position.
Glad it is OK...
We all do it, I think?

I thank you all for your support and suggestions. I will order up a battery switch. But Flowmeister, what is a key? Actually my my modern 1990's vehicles have them but they stay in the ignition 24/7. The woodie has a push-pull ignition switch on the dash. Maybe I need to address that before I drive to Wavecrest. I've been on this island for 40 years and the locals say the only time they lock their cars is late summer and that's only to keep their friends from filling up their cars with surplus zuchinni. If someone stole a car here, they'd have to wait an hour or more sitting in the ferry line to get it off. Ok, off to that jobsite now.....

GB: I've had good luck with the little green cut off switch. Cheap and it works.
It's not real brass.

I was going to mention those "green knob" cutoffs. Was told to avoid those, fwiw, they have only a tiny gauge conductor (made of golly knows what material) at one point in the connection. They do work though.

I too have made this mistake. I now have become OCD about checking, double checking and sometimes triple checking to make sure the ignition switch is OFF. I have even parked in the garage, triple checked, went in to the house and came back out a few minutes later just to make sure it is OFF. I now have a problem that consumes me!

FWIW, I have installed a circuit breaker with an additional manual break. This opens and closes all of the electrical system. When I'm done using the car I just press the little red button and the circuit is opened and a little tab drops down. To reactivate I just push up the tab to reset the breaker.

GB I know you're thrifty and I remember from your woodie build post that there is a heavy equipment salvage yard near you. Pretty much all pieces of heavy equipment/forestry, excavation and big trucks have a quality battery disconnect switch in the cab or near the battery box. Good quality switches will set you back $100.+/_ Used $20. is fair as it's not a high demand item. Those green ones are junk! Just tryin' to save U a couple a bucks...Bill
