Default 1932-1938 Ford Start Hand Crank I.D.

Hi guys, I am hoping that you could help me figure out my crank handle which I found in my 1938 Ford trunk. This crank handle accepts an extension with round flat taper on one side(not square). Do you know what year ford(s) this was used, and the length of extension for this handle? I think that it could be for a 1932 Ford(4-cyl?/8-cyl?) with 17.8" long extension, but not sure.

Also, what crank handle(round flat taper/square extension), and what extension length is correct for my 1938? I think the '38 handle should accept the square end extension which is 26.4" long. Thanks for your help. Best Regards, Roger

I believe the handle you have was used in 1932 only. The square taper was used in 1932 also and up through '48.

Hey Bruce, Thanks for your quick reply. Based on your comments, I think that my hand crank that accepts round sloped flat extension was an early design for the 4-cyl. Model B. Do you think this design was used on 4-cyl engines up to 1934? Also, does the 17.8" long extension sound right? Thanks Again, Roger

Well, both sizes of '32 cranks, B and V8, exist in both styles. I've never seen a non-32 one made with the slant cut...my personal belief is that the slant-cut was an early manufacturing kludge and was replaced entirely by the square sort.
I'm at work and don't have either iron or paper handy to document '32 length!

The 17 7/8" half-round extension was the second of two half-round extensions released for '32 V-8s. The earlier version was 17 1/8" long. The '32 Model B half-round extensions were 15 3/8" (first version) and 16 1/8" long (second version). I agree with Bruce that the half-round type was unique to the '32 model year. The '33-'34 four-cylinder hand crank extensions differed in length from the '32 version.

Thanks guys for all the good information. Now, If a Ford Barn member needed an original 1932 hand crank with correct length extension for their vehicle, I could machine the end length to suit from a 20-1/8"long square end taper extension which does not fit my '38. Hopefully, I can help somebody out there. Thanks, Ford Barn
