It sounds like you might have a very big problem. You should be able to find the same number on the vehicle. Your DMV will want to see it. Otherwise you have a worthless piece of paper and a vehicle that you can't prove is yours. Keep the seller on a short leash, you may need him. One possibility is that the transmission was replaced with one from a '34 and the number on the transmission was used to identify the car but that is not the way it is done in California. California uses the number on the frame. Get this resolved immediately before the seller vanishes.

New York State does not issue titles for vehicles built before 1972.
