Alan, is your idea about the crossover related to eliminating vapor lock or was there something else you were looking to do?
I hope my comments don't hijack your purpose, but it seems like the answer to vapor lock is to cool the pump, thus the gas into the carb.
How about placing a thermal insulator between the pump and riser and/or insulating the pump?

The hot gas problem must be one reason the new cars have the fuel pump in the tank.
