Default Update-on my 8BA oil pressure problem

Back in December I posted an erratic/low oil pressure problem with my fresh 276" engine during break-in. A spare new pump was then sent to flatjack9 for a performance test, with good normal results.

I recently removed the suspect pump and installed the tested pump. Cold pressure is now over 50 psi, and 25 at hot 180* idle with 10W30 Valvoline VR1 and Wix (NAPA)1515 filter. Problem solved!
I'll try to find out the problem with the bad pump in the future.

Was the defective pump a Melling new pump? ........or an aftermarket pump?

The body is stamped USA and 4C17. The cover is stamped M19 and USA.
I don't have the box or remember where I bought it from, but it would have been either Speedway or the old Hot Rod and Custom Supply 20 plus years ago.

Thanks for clarifying the pump source. I think Melling had some issues with their M-19 pumps quite a few years ago but we’ve not heard of any problems in any we’ve sold over the past 10 years. Glad your issue is resolved.

i have to wonder, how can a new pump be bad? too much clearance between the gears and housing? poorly machined gears? there has to be leakage some where that was machined in when new. good you are past it now
