Re: Looking for the 37 / 38 / 39 / GURU's
Seems to me some of the early parts books have pictures to ID the shocks. I'll try to remember to check tomorrow.

The 1938-39 Chassis parts list dated Jan 1939 has details and pictures of shocks 1928 -1939. Unfortunately I am unable to scan. Maybe someone else also has this catalog and can scan for you.

Maybe a quick look at the EFV-8 Clubs Restoration Books for those years would provide some guidance on which type shocks were used by FoMoCo during production for those years.

Re: Looking for the 37 / 38 / 39 / GURU's
The 37 Ford book list the shocks as a carry over from 36, Nearly all of the 37 rear shocks mounted under the frame, not through it (like 36). The front shocks lost the stamped steel cover from 36 and looked more like the rears with the larger cast body with internals retained by the ring with three flats like the rears (adjustable packing gland). 38 & part early production 39 (May) used the adjustable packing gland, The spring loaded seal type was introduced, the adjustable gland is phased out.

I just now finished going over that book and it is as you say. I asked the Question the way I did because I want to get a good handle on what shocks are correct in what year. And not have a lot of well it's on my car so it has to be right !! The book does not get into shock body size. nor arm #'s or arm location in relation to the plug / does it point to the plug or away, I thought the wagons used a longer rear arm but the set that came in is not that way. Terry do you have any of these answers? I am asking the Questions of all 3 years. If anyone knows. In all the reference books I have looked at they just kind of white wash over the shocks. leaving a lot of unanswered Questions in my mind. I want to rebuild the best , most accurate shocks that I can for you guys but I need your help in this matter. THANKS for ANY INPUT |

Re: Looking for the 37 / 38 / 39 / GURU's
I have noticed that the front shocks are dated on the side that faces the frame. You have to look close, the numbers are 1/16" high and are in the center. At least the 1940 shocks on my 1939 are this way.

Bill:
Yes I seem to see that mostly on 34's---35's It does get confusing though the 38 / 39 book shows the difference in the 39 shock early vs. late production. But it also shows the arm each going in opposite directions. one points to the plug one points away and there is no mention of body size front or back>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> |

All the passenger and light commercial (Pickup) shocks are the same. Station Wagon shocks are the same as the other passenger.

Re: Looking for the 37 / 38 / 39 / GURU's
The shocks may be the same But & it is a big BUTT Different arms and pointing is different directions.46 pickup comes to mind. the arm in mounted what I would call backwards to the car. And the arn has a Large hole on end that a rubber bushing go into ( PART # 11A-18060-A ) witch I am looking for.
then a 42/46 Panel del has a arm that is 9.48" long. These differences is what makes it hard to Id them. |

Re: Looking for the 37 / 38 / 39 / GURU's
Don Rogers mentions, in the 35-6 restoration book, that some late production 36 had the rear shock mounted under the frame, using 37 shocks.
The 37 book list the front arms as 6" and rears at 7-1/4" C/L-C/L. There is no number listed for the arm (does not say there was no numbers either). The 38-39 restoration book list the 38 shock as having "double blowoff valve" as a NEW feature. It also list two different shocks one with "separate ring wing and flange" it is the A1 shock. The other shock had a "one piece ring wing and flange" it is the A2 shock. Early 39 used the A1 front and rear shocks until used up and release of the spring loaded seal shock in May. The A2 REAR shock was used in early 39 The A2 Fronts were obsoleted and replaced by the 91A front shock with a shorter 5.970 to 6.030 C/L-C/L arm. After May of 39 the spring loaded seal type shock was used. The 39 shocks were not used on any of the 40 cars. The diameter of the shock body was consistent from mid 34 until 1941. In 41 the diameter of the shocks increased. Last edited by Terry,OH; 01-15-2014 at 08:15 AM. |

Re: Looking for the 37 / 38 / 39 / GURU's
This may have been the shock page mentioned but I took this from the 38 thru 41 Ford/Merc Chassis parts catalog. Not much there though.
I was hoping it would have better image quality but it helps to open it in a window. It is much more readable on my end. |
