Default Merc banjo axle

It is my understanding that some of the merc pinions were welded to the drive shaft. Does anyone have a picture of this? Did they weld the coupler at both ends? Were the shaft and pinion splined?

Trying to figure out if a merc ring and pinion will work for a quick change.
Thanks!

Don't think it was welded. I do believe it's all made together. I'm thinking that they did that from 39 -41 but not positive.

I have two sets of them, the pinion gears and drive shaft are machined from one piece of steel. So that the pinion gear is 4-5 feet long. The 1946 is a 3.54 ratio, the 1947 is 3.78.

I would trade the 3.78 for another 3.54.

What was their logic for a one piece driveshaft and pinion used by Mercury?

Just speculation here, but you must remember that old Henry Ford was always on the prowl for a quicker assembly, less complicated technology, fewer parts automobile. He always got his way, even when he was dead wrong.

The Mercury was a slightly heavier car with a slightly higher HP engine and I figure it was to eliminate the spline coupling that was one of the weak points in the Ford design. They only used it for a short time so the spline coupling won out in the end.

They can be cut down and reslined if the diameter of the shaft is compatible with the normal six spline pinions.
