Default So I bought my new motor yesterday...

So I found a C69A block, crank, pistons, rods, etc., all disassembled and bought the works for $500CDN (sadly this is only about $375USD these days).

A couple of concerns, the main one being the broken (and repaired) bellhousing.

The crank is scuffed and may need to be turned.

The good: It is all apart and clean (apparently checked for cracks and good to rebuild).

The bores are all clean and I measured them to 3.274" (the pistons are used and I haven't measured them yet.

I don't really recognize the valve reliefs - if anyone has info on those, I would appreciate your knowledge.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
George

Are those hairline cracks below the studs in the block normal?

.086" over? That's a funny size. The bellhousing looks like a workable repair, from what can be seen in that pic. It looks like it has the second boss bored in the oil distribution area. Check to see if the horizontal passage has been blocked off.

Been running my 59 AB for 17 years with the same corner missing off the bell housing. I'll take a chance and say that your repaired bell housing should be fine.

I wouldn't worry about that repaired bellhousing.
Looks like it was a good job.

If your talking about the ones to the center water jackets, then yes, they are normal and won't hurt anything Just be sure to put a good sealant on the threads of the studs, or bolts.

So, I was going through the boxes of spare parts that came with the engine and there are 16 small ford parts boxes PN 8N6500.

these are all new adjustable lifters, the mystery is that 8 of them are solid and 8 of them are hollow?

A mistake?

(I'm no expert) Those sound like the 8N tractor lifters. They are 4 cylinder motors so would have been used in sets of eight. Maybe bought in 2 sets of eight hence two different types. They may have been equivalents of each other, so not numbered differently by Ford.

Kinda guessing.

Mart.

I just took a look at the pistons and they are 4 ring dome type which measure 3.263"

there is a set of new rings with them and they are marked .080

the rods include 3 marked 29A, 1 marked 99A and 4 are "I dunno".

*note bonus: I found 16new TRW valves and a set of new TRW Cam bearings.

It looks like someone had been getting the parts together to doa rebuild on this engine.

ford tractor adjustable lifters are very heavy as compared to Johnson adjustable lifters. I am using a set of these right now and have had no problems with them

Your 95 % oil flow hole looks a bit small .

Upon advice from here, I tapped both holes to I think 3/8 BSP, so there is a full 7/16ths hole thru and no extra restriction from standard. oil gallery size to and from the filter.

Seems like a lot of broken and repaired blocks, but it sounds like a useable piece (making me happy ).

Sounds to me like you got a screaming deal when you bought that engine. That's a lot of good stuff there!

I noticed the crank only has a single oiling hole on the rod journals - I believe this is for full floating rod bearings $$$ (Reds has them for $425). I thought I read here that I can use the 29A rods with a newer crank with insert rod bearings - is that feasible?
