Removing Pilot Bearing, simple hydrologics...bread!

This worked for me. I packed the pilot bearing hole with bread and pushed/tapped it out using a 7/16 nut driver and a lead mallet. It popped right out. Note: if it would not of come out easily I was prepared to buy the right tool, but it tapped out with little force from the lead mallet and nut driver combination,

Packing it with grease, then tapping the dummy pilot in also works sometimes.. Never tried white bread..

I am proud on how it came, but what is the best way to tap it back in?

I use a hammer and a large socket, small extension that fits the outer circumference. Don't hit on any of the rotating parts if your using a roller bearing

Select a socket having the same diameter as the outer bearing race. Place the pilot bearing in the flywheel. Place the socket against the outer bearing race matching the circumference of the bearing. Tap the socket with a hammer or mallet until you see the bearing flush with the flywheel or you hear a "thunk", which ever comes first.

Thanks gentlemen, a 1 1/4 inch socket worked well, the thunk sound was right on with it sitting flush.

I wouldn't waste whole wheat bread doing this, but it sounds like a good use for white bread.

I've always used grease to remove them.

BTW, I noticed the safety wire and pin retaining washer is missing.

I heard grease gives you the squirts and bread did not. That is why I went with bread.

I just looked in my 2015 Snyder's catalog and can't find that flywheel dowel pin retainer plate listed.
If your's is missing you might have to call Bert's for a good used one.

As we all know fully restored means nice paint and put back together however. The reason I have it apart is do to clutch in backwards plus what ever else I find.

You and Tom are good Christmas humor . You can always go to the thrift store and get you choice . Personally I just use the Krw remover and replacer tool.

The sockets work ok in a pinch

It's in Snyders catalog. Just in a different place. I ordered one.. Fits well.

I used grease in my 1940 Ford pilot bearing and it blew the outer seal out, then had to use a internal slide puller to remove the bearing. That is the only one that ever done that so grease works good 99% of the time.
