Fuel pump pushrod length

I am putting an Edelbrock Slingshot ('32-'48) on an 8BA. Not all of the bolt holes in the intake have holes in the block to receive them but I believe this has been covered elsewhere. I am using a 59AB style fuel pump and mount, which is vented and provides an oil fill. I have tried both length fuel pump pushrods for this set-up and one is too short, the other too long. Is there one that fits just right, or do I trim the long one (and try not to have two that are too short)?

The early pushrod is a smaller dia. than the 8BA rod which is 10-1/16" long and the early one should not be used.
Most of the original 8BA rods are all steel and the ends are brazed into the tube.
Replacement 8BA rods have an aluminum tube and the upper end can be removed to allow the length change.
Determine what length you need and modify the correct 7/16" dia 8BA rod.

I'm pretty sure the Slingshot would take the 8 7/8" long rod from the 59 or earlier engines. You press an early pushrod bushing in the 8BA bushing because the early pushrod is smaller in diameter. Or modify the 8BA rod to fit.

Unfortunately I’m still messing around with this. My understanding is that the fulcrum arm on the fuel pump needs to have a little pre-load with the pushrod in the lowest position ( it goes down approximately 1/4”). How do I determine what is a little pre-load (as opposed to being so much that the arm cannot make a full stroke because it’s already into it before the pushrod begins to rise?) thanks, Dave

Remove the fuel pump stand, with a small 3/16” or 1/4” rod measure depth from mounting surface to the cam( on low side).
Then measure from base of stand to pump lever. Add the two together +gasket thickness, and this is the length your pushrod should be.
