Default Picture of Firewall needed

On my '47 V8 sedan, the previous owner installed a non-stock heater/defroster. In fact, it is from a '49 - '54 Chebby truck.

At Carlisle last week, I located an original '46 - '48 heater/def unit. Plans are to swap them this winter.

The problem I have is, the current heater unit is installed in a different location compared to photos I've seen of cars with the stock heater. And, looking at my firewall (see pic) I can not see where it would fit/mount.

If anyone has a picture of their firewall that clearly shows the inlet/outlet and the three mounting holes, I would appreciate that.

I have a 1946 Ford Tudor that I am parting out. The motor is out of the engine compartment. I can get you a clean shot of the firewall by midweek.

Sorry bout the upside down photo, my phone does that all the time.

The water hoses were routed differently depending on the year. The 46 and early 47 the hoses came through the firewall one on each side of the intake. Late 47 and 48 came out on passenger side of intake one over the other your picture seems to show the holes for the latter.

I have a 48 Merc 114 (Canadian car same as Ford). In mine there are three mounting bolts, two on passenger side one on drivers side. They are the long bolts with washers and nuts in the photo. The copper tubes are, one on the left one on the right. (No hoses attached in the picture.) Hope this helps.

Here is another pic. For some reason I am having trouble putting more than one pic in a post with my iPad.

The new heater core's inlet/outlet tubes are going to have to go on either side of the intake, as Dyna pictured. Now I see that the P/O had plugged those holes, along with the three mounting holes. Is the hose on the drivers side still routed over to the passenger head?

rg130, looks like you have the "late" model heater (ref: post #5). Do you have a hole on the driver side too?

My car is a late 47 with both heater hoses on the passenger side one on top of the other.

To all who provided pictures and help, thank you. A bench test of the motor was successful. Will post a before and after pic when done.

Finally, here is what we have, just before installation of the stock rebuilt heater unit.
Could not find an existing modern heater core substitute to suit my needs, so I had it re-cored at BJR Radiator in Rochester, NY. Tricky, because it had to be assembled to the heater box for soldering, to get the pipes lined up correctly.
Motor was gone through by NorthStar Auto Electric in Macedon, NY.
Added a new wire harness from MAC's. Went through 2 switches to find a good one (bi-directional, 2 speed).
Ain't cheap, but glad it's done!!!

That looks great! Did you get the holes figured out?
Have you found a source for the defrost tubes?

Here's one I did recently for my AV8, still need to wire the switch.

Slight detour before I install the heater. While I was under the dash, looking at the wires, man, noticed that they were in bad shape. Previous owner(s) patched here and there, and cut and spliced others. Decided to replace the harness. Much easier with no heater and radio (replaced the speaker also). Almost done.

Ralph, yes, I figured out the holes for the heater pipes, one on each side of the fuel pump. The three mounting holes were filled in with a metal slug and RTV. Luckily, the defrost tubes are in excellent shape, so I'll reuse them.

One question. Trying to find the "correct" routing of the heater hose on the drivers side of the fuel pump, crossing over the intake to the right head. In front of the carb, or behind it? Which of the two pipe tap holes, in front of the rad hose or the one behind?

Can not easily find any convincing pictures in any book or web.

Thanks.

Jim

Wire harness in, heater installed. Here are pictures of what I have come up with for the routing of the heater hoses. Behind the carburetor works best for me, for as I rotate the nipple towards the front of the carb, it interferes with the spark plug wire conduit. Those ugly chartreuse wire ties will be coming off as soon as I receive shipment of 3/16 split conduit wire covering.
